How to Make Sticky Buns with Frozen Dough

These pecan sticky buns are effortless to make with only a few simple ingredients. Mix together unsalted butter and light brown sugar in a small bowl until smooth. Add honey, corn syrup, and vanilla and mix well. Pour the brown sugar mixture into the bottom of a 9×13-inch pan. Sprinkle with chopped pecans. Place the frozen cinnamon rolls on top of the pecans. Cover the pan and let rise in a warm place. Once the rolls are nice and puffy, bake them in a preheated oven on the middle rack until golden brown. Run a knife along the edge of the pan and invert onto a serving dish.

Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • I use Rhodes frozen cinnamon roll dough. I buy the rolls at Walmart.
  • Here is our recipe for Homemade Cinnamon Rolls made with active dry yeast, all-purpose flour, instant dry milk, sugar, salt, oil, and water: https://www.plainchicken.com/lunch-lady-homemade-cinnamon-rolls/
  • You can use any nut that you enjoy. Pecans, walnuts, pistachios, or peanuts all taste great.
  • Can substitute a few tablespoons of maple syrup for the honey or corn syrup in the recipe.
  • You can make the glaze in a small saucepan. Add all the ingredients to the pan and cook over medium heat until the butter melts. Pour the glaze into the baking dish. Add peans and cinnamon rolls.

    • Reheat in the microwave.

Are sticky buns identical to cinnamon rolls?

Both cinnamon rolls and sticky buns share the same dough and cinnamon sugar filling as their foundation. However, the key distinction lies in their baking process and toppings. Cinnamon rolls are baked and later adorned with a sweet white sugar glaze or cream cheese frosting. In contrast, sticky buns take a different path as they are baked immersed in a luscious brown sugar and pecan caramel sauce, resulting in their irresistible sticky texture and delightful sweetness.

Notes:

I used a bag of frozen Rhode’s Cinnamon Rolls.
Make sure to buy unbaked cinnamon roll dough and not prebaked/premade frozen cinnamon rolls.
Can use light or dark corn syrup.
To have Sticky Buns in the morning for breakfast, prepare through step 2. Cover pan with plastic wrap sprayed with cooking spray. Place the pan in the refrigerator overnight or all day long. When you’re ready to begin baking, take the pan out of the refrigerator. Make sure dough is double in size. You may need to let the product continue to rise slightly at room temperature.

  1. I put the prepared pan of rolls in the oven just before bedtime with the oven light on. It makes a nice cozy atmosphere for the rolls to rise. In the morning take them out. preheat the oven, and then put them back in to finish it off. Works great!
