Pin This RecipeThe BEST Slow Cooker Dressing
Homemade dressing is my favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal. I could skip the turkey and just eat dressing and gravy and be happy. My Mom makes amazing dressing. Her recipe is made to cook with a whole turkey or bone-in turkey breast (https://www.plainchicken.com/moms-turkey-dressing/). This year, Chicken Legs and I are getting a boneless turkey breast from Honey Baked Ham, so I needed a dressing recipe that isn’t baked with a turkey. I adapted my Mom’s recipe to come up with this yummy Cornbread Dressing made in the slow cooker.
How to Make Cornbread Dressing in the Crockpot
This dressing is SO delicious! The base of this dressing is obviously cornbread. To save time, I make the cornbread the day before I made the dressing. It only takes a few minutes to mix everything together, and I let the slow cooker do its job. It takes about 4 hours for the dressing to cook. I love just being able to throw everything in the slow cooker and forget about it. SO easy! I can’t wait to make this again for our Thanksgiving feast!
To make the dressing, combine cooked and crumbled cornbread, stuffing mix, cream of chicken soup, chicken broth, onion, celery, eggs, sage, salt, and pepper. Place the mixture in the slow cooker and top with some butter. Cover and cook.
- I used two packages of Martha White Buttermilk Cornbread Mix for the cornbread in this recipe. You can substitute Jiffy Mix if you prefer.
- Here is our recipe for Homemade Southern Cornbread: https://www.plainchicken.com/southern-cornbread/
- Do NOT make the stuffing. You are only going to use the mix.
- Can use any Cream of Soups in this recipe. I prefer Cream of Chicken Soup. Cream of Mushroom or Cream of Celery would work great too.

This was soooo good and moist!
I’m making this for Thanksgiving for 6 people. Will the leftovers freeze and still be good for Christmas?
Yes – you may need to add some chicken broth when reheating.
Thanks for answering!
My boss made this for a potluck and it was AMAZING
can i use stovetop instead of pepperidge farm? already have it…
You can try it. I haven’t used stovetop, so I can not say how it changes the recipe. My guess is that it is fine.
Can you add chicken to this recipe?
I add already cooked rotisserie chicken and everyone loves it.
Hi could this be cooked on hi instead of low?
Yes
I have made this for a few years now. It is delicious! I love the convenience of pouring everything into the slow cooker and turn it on. Frees up the oven for all the other delicious casseroles! I use the cream of celery soup instead and veggie broth for my vegeterian family members. I do stir it after a few hours because the crust develops and I don’t want part of it to burn.
can this be made in the oven?
I’m sure that it can. I have not made this in the oven, so I do not know the cooking time for you.
My oven dressing is very similar. 6 cups cooked cornbread, 2 cups bread crumps or the stuffing mix, one can cream of chicken, one egg, 2Tbsp poultry seasoning, 1Tbsp sage, salt and pepper. One onion, 3-4 celery stalks and 2 cups chicken broth or enough to make the mixture pour like cornbread.
Cook at 400 for about 45min-1 hour
I’ve made it like this one year.its delicious
Can you double this in one crockpot? I’m trying to make enough for a large crowd.
This makes a full crockpot. It expands a lot while cooking. I’ve made it 4 years in a row.
Loved this — definitely a keeper! I think I’ll throw in some dried cranberries next time, though.
Hi, what does the soup do for the dressing?
Thank you
Gives it more flavor and moistens. It’s definitely a must ingredient.
can I make this in the oven and if so how long and what temp?
Steph, How many cups of cornbread would this be. Would like to make my own buttermilk cornbread. Thanks so much. This sounds delicious.
