This recipe came about by accident. I needed a dessert for a last-minute dinner party. I didn’t have some of the ingredients for my regular key lime pie, so I had to improvise. OMG! Such a delicious accident. Everyone LOVED the pie. I didn’t have any leftovers – much to Chicken Legs’ dismay. I ended up making another pie the next day so he could have another slice.
How to Make Sour Cream Key Lime Pie
This Sour Cream Key Lime Pie is very easy to make. Start with a graham cracker crust. You can make your own or use a store-bought crust. Next whisk together sweetened condensed milk, key lime zest, key lime juice, sour cream, and egg yolks. Pour the key lime mixture into the crust and bake. Once the pie has cooled slightly, pop it in the refrigerator until it is nice and cold.
You can use regular limes if you can’t find key limes. You can also use bottled key lime juice and skip the zest if key limes aren’t readily available.
Can Key Lime Pie be Made in Advance?
You can make this pie a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve it. I actually prefer to make this ahead of time. It gives the pie time to set up and the flavors to really develop. I haven’t frozen the pie, but I think it would work just fine.
We like to serve this pie with a dollop of fresh whipped cream and lime zest. You can also top the pie with a small tub of cool whip.

Sour Cream Key Lime Pie
Ingredients:
- 1 (14-oz) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 Tbsp fresh key lime zest
- ½ cup key lime juice
- 3 egg yolks
- ¼ cup sour cream
- 1 (9-inch) graham cracker crust (store-bought is fine)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350ºF.
- Whisk together sweetened condensed milk, key lime zest, key lime juice, egg yolks, and sour cream.
- Pour mixture into prepared graham cracker crust.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool and refrigerate 2 hours, or until ready to serve.
- Top with fresh whipped cream or cool whip.
