Easy Air Fryer Hamburgers

I love a good burger. I prefer burgers at home over most restaurants. We usually grill our burgers, but I decided to give them a try in our air fryer. Have you ever cooked hamburgers in the air fryer? OMG! Game changer! I may never grill burgers again. This is the easiest possible method to cook burgers. No prepping the grill, just pop them in the air fryer basket and cook. The burgers were ready to eat in under 10 minutes and clean up was a breeze! This has quickly become one of my favorite air fryer recipes. Add these delicious burgers to your menu when you need a meal the whole family will enjoy!

What is an air fryer? 

An air fryer is basically a countertop convection oven. It circulates hot air around the food for faster cooking. The rapidly circulating air makes the food crispy, much like deep frying but without the need for oil. You also don’t need to preheat the air fryer, making cooking in the air fryer much faster than cooking in the oven.

How to Cook Burgers in the Air Fryer

Making hamburgers at home in the air fryer is very simple. My favorite way to season ground beef for burgers is to use a packet of ranch dressing mix. In a large bowl, gently combine fresh ground beef and a packet of ranch dressing mix, Divide the meat into equal patties. Place the beef patties in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook the burgers to a few degrees below the desired internal temperature. Place a slice of American cheese on top of each burger. Let the cheese sit on top of the burger for a minute and then cook in the air fryer for an additional minute until the cheese has melted. Remove the burgers and serve on toasted hamburger buns or lettuce buns.

Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Air Fryer brand do you recommend?  I have the Philips XXL Air Fryer and the Philips XL Air Fryer. I love them both, but I definitely recommend the Philips XXL Air FryerIt is larger and can cook an entire meal at once.
  • Do I need to preheat the air fryer? No. You can preheat it for a few minutes if you like, but it isn’t necessary. Just season the steak, place it in the air fryer basket and cook until it reaches the desired temperature.
  • Do I need to flip the burgers while they cook? There is no need to flip the burgers during the cooking time. The air fryer circulates the air all around the food so it will be evenly cooked and brown all over.
  • Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook the burgers in batches. Place cooked burgers on a plate and cover with aluminum foil to keep them warm while cooking more burgers.
  • I use a kitchen scale to divide the meat into equal patties. I typically do three burgers for a pound of ground beef.
  • You can cook the burger patties immediately, refrigerate them overnight or freeze them for later.
  • This recipe is for ⅓ pound burgers. I cook them to about medium. There was very little pink on the inside of the burger. If you want medium-rare burgers, lower the cook time by a minute or two.
  • Insert an instant read meat thermometer horizontally from the side to reach the thickest part of the burger. Remove the burgers from the oven a little before the desired temperature, as the internal temperature will continue to rise after they are removed from the oven.
    • Medium-rare: 130˚ to 135˚
    • Medium: 140˚ to 145˚
    • Medium-well: 150˚ to 155˚
  • You can season the burgers with anything you prefer. Onion powder, black pepper, liquid smoke, garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce are all great!

This cooking method makes delicious juicy hamburgers every single time. It is our go-to burger recipe. Let everyone top their burger with their favorite toppings – lettuce, tomatoes, red onion pickles, mayonnaise, bbq sauce, mustard, ketchup, and bacon are all great options. Instructions:

  • Combine ground beef and ranch dressing mix. Form into 3 burger patties.
  • Place hamburger patties in the basket of the air fryer.
  • Set air fryer for 400ºF. Cook 6 minutes.
  • Place cheese slices on top of burgers and cook an additional 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Serve burgers on hamburger buns with favorite toppings.

Notes:

Can freeze burger patties unbaked for later. To cook, thaw, and cook as directed above.
Can cook burgers frozen. Just add a few minutes to the cooking time.

  1. only 2nd time I used Air fryer .. great flavor but cheese slid off burger and was at bottom of basket.
    What happened?

    1. I put the cheese on then close the basket but with the air fryer off. that was the air isn't blowing around the cheese, but there's still enough residual heat in the fryer from cooking the burgers to melt the cheese
