How to Make Yellow Cake and Chocolate Frosting

This cake is super easy to make. Start with a box of yellow cake mix. Add pudding mix, sour cream, oil, eggs, milk, and vanilla. Pour the batter into the cake pan of your choice and bake. I baked the cake in two 8-inch cake pans. Each cake layer is thick enough to split into two layers to make a four-layer cake if you wish.

While the cake is baking, whip up the chocolate buttercream frosting. Melt some chocolate chips and let them cool. Add butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and heavy cream. Mix it all together and refrigerate until ready to frost the cake.

I love how easy and simple this dessert is to make. Here are a couple of tips for making sure your cake turns out perfectly.

  • Don’t use low-fat or fat-free ingredients.
  • Do not make the pudding. Just use the dry pudding mix in the cake batter.
  • You can make the cake in any pan you prefer. Use the box baking times as a guideline.
  • You can make the cake in advance and freeze it unfrosted until ready to serve.
  • The buttercream frosting can be made in advance and refrigerated before frosting the cake. The frosting will keep 2 or 3 days in the refrigerator.
  • Store the cake in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
