Easy Homemade Salad Dressing

Everyone loves a house salad from their favorite restaurant. This particular house salad recipe comes from The Village Tavern. A Plain Chicken reader recently sent me the recipe. They published their house salad in the newspaper years ago. I read over the ingredients and thought it sounded easy and delicious. Salad with tomatoes, red onion, mushrooms, blue cheese, bacon, and a quick homemade vinegarette.  This salad is great as a side or for a quick lunch or dinner!

How to Make The Village Tavern House Salad

This Village Tavern House Salad is super easy to make. Start with tossing together some salad mix, mushrooms, red onion, tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles, and bacon. Next, make the vinegarette. Place cider vinegar, minced garlic, salt, pepper, sugar, and some blended oil in a blender. Pulse a few times until it is combined. Pour some of the salad dressing over the salad mix and enjoy!

You can make the salad dressing ahead of time and keep it in the refrigerator. I like to store the dressing in a mason jar and shake it up before using it. This recipe uses blended oil. If you can’t find blended oil, simply use a combination of olive oil and canola oil.

This House Salad is great like it is, but it is equally delicious topped with some grilled chicken or grilled steak. It is a great way to use up any leftovers!

  • ½ cup mushrooms, sliced ¼ inch
  • ½ cup blue cheese, crumbled
  • ¼ cup bacon crumbles
  • ¼ cup red onion, thinly sliced

Instructions:

  • Combine vinegar, garlic, salt, sugar and pepper in a mixing bowl or blender. Mix together well. Slowly add oil, mixing constantly to emulsify. Transfer to a storage container and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  • Place salad mix and tomatoes in a large bowl. Add the desired amount of dressing and toss to coat.
  • Evenly pile salad mixture into center of a large bowl and top with mushrooms, blue cheese, bacon & red onion slices.

Notes:

You will have leftover dressing. It will keep for about 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
May omit bacon for a vegetarian dish.
Can use any amount of the various salad ingredients that you prefer. Don’t like mushrooms? You can leave them out. Want more tomatoes? Add as many as you wish.

  1. Do you have to use jarred garlic ? I didn’t see any at the second store I went to…….I think they have it at Walmart, but I’d already been there and didn’t want to make another trip.

  2. The salad dressing tastes exactly like the one from my favorite hometown Italian restaurant! My husband was so excited that I found this, it’s delicious!!
