How to Make Wicked Awesome Chicken
This chicken tastes GREAT and only has four simple ingredients in the marinade. You probably have them in your pantry right now! Italian dressing, Dale’s Steak Seasoning, BBQ sauce, and hot sauce. Whisk everything together and pour over the chicken. Let the chicken marinate as long as you can and then cook.
Tips for Making Grilled Chicken
- I used Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce. You can use any BBQ sauce you like.
- I used Frank’s Hot Sauce in this marinade. You can use Frank’s Wing Sauce in place of the hot sauce. I’ve used both and they are equally delicious.
- Never heard of Dale’s Steak Seasoning? It is a soy sauce-based marinade. You can find it here: https://amzn.to/3dFo1HI I suggest buying the low-sodium version as the original version is very salty.
- You can make your own version of Dale’s Steak Seasoning with my All-Purpose Marinade recipe: https://www.plainchicken.com/all-purpose-marinade/
- To ensure even cooking of the chicken, pound the chicken to an even thickness with a meat mallet.
How to Grill Chicken without a Grill
If you don’t have a grill, you can still make this yummy chicken. Pan sear the chicken on both sides for 3 or 4 minutes. Place the chicken on a baking sheet and bake at 400ºF for 10 minutes.

I know this is a few years old, but could I cook this in a crockpot?
You can.
It’s this really hot? We are not into hot and spicy stuff.
No – the hot sauce just gives it flavor
This chicken is now my favorite. So delicious!! Adding to my “tried & true” recipes list. Thanks for sharing.
Have made the several times. Marinate over night. Follow recipe, simply delish! Everyone loves
It. Thank you.
This is easily one of the best marinades I have used. Tastes great on chicken thighs or breast. Highly recommend for meal prep or if just cooking tacos for the family. 10/10! Thank you!
I made this last night after marinating overnight. Made exactly as written but used your skillet/oven method to cook it. I also boiled the marinade for about 10 minutes and used it over the chicken and rice. Everyone said it was delicious!!
Do I cover the chicken with foil or leave it uncovered?
Made this tonight for dinner! It was amazing! Will be adding it to the keeper pile!
I don’t have a grill. I did the marinate chicken overnight and will be putting it in the oven.
When I put it in the oven, my question is: Do I cover the pan or leave uncovered?
Thank you.
I’ve made this twice now, and it’s definitely a keeper! I didn’t have Dale’s, so used the all purpose meat marinade recipe mentioned in the notes, as well as a home made Italian dressing. I was concerned about the amount of hot sauce as my little ones do not like heat, but it wasn’t at all overpowering and just enhanced the overall flavor of the chicken.
Thanks for sharing this awesome recipe!
YAY! So glad you enjoyed it.
We made this for Mother’s Day and it was a huge hit! Is it possible and safe to reserve the marinade and boil it down for a dipping sauce? Would it be better to make a double batch of the marinade and use one batch for a basting or dipping sauce?
Thank you for sharing so many wonderful recipes! You are my go-to when looking for a new recipe.
Making this for Mother’s Day, along with your Pepper
Jack Potatoes !!!
Enjoy! Both are delicious!
