Notes:
I used a combination of ground beef and sausage in this yummy Black-Eyed Pea Chili. It really gives the chili a nice flavor. Feel free to use all ground beef, all sausage, ground turkey, or turkey sausage. Any combination will be delicious.
I used a roll of Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage.
Is Black Eyed Pea Chili spicy? No. I used a can of Rotel diced tomatoes and green chiles in the chili. It gave the chili the perfect amount of heat. Not hot, but not bland. I promise this isn't hot. Chicken Legs doesn't like spicy food and said this was perfect. If you are worried about the heat, try a can of mild diced tomatoes and green chiles or a can of plain diced tomatoes.
Can I cook this chili on HIGH? Yes! You can cook the chili for 3 to 4 hours on HIGH if you prefer.
Can Black Eyed Pea Chili be made on the stovetop? Yes! Cook the meat and add the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes to an hour.
Can I freeze chili? Yes! You can freeze the leftover chili for a quick meal later. To reheat, thaw and reheat on the stove or in the microwave.
To make a freezer meal, brown the meat, and add all the ingredients in a gallon ziplock freezer bag. When ready to make the chili, place the contents of the freezer bag in the crockpot and cook. There is no need to thaw the ingredients before adding them to the slow cooker. You will need to cook the chili on the longer end of the cooking time.
