Cake Mix Dinner Rolls - homemade yeast bread made with cake mix. Super simple to make and ready to eat in under two hours. Yeast, water, cake mix, flour, and butter. The rolls are a little sweet and a whole lotta delicious! They go with everything - chicken, pork, beef, casseroles, soups. They are perfect for any upcoming holiday meals!
In a large bowl of an electric stand mixer, dissolve yeast in 1½ cups warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes. Stir in the flour and cake mix. Mix until the dough is smooth.
Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal pieces and form into rounds. Let rest for 5 minutes and then roll into 12-inch circles.
Cut each circle into 10 wedges. Brush melted margarine onto the circles. Roll up the wedges, beginning at the wide end.
Place the rolls on parchment-lined baking sheets. Whisk together egg and 1 Tbsp water. Brush the rolls with the egg wash. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 25 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
Bake the rolls 15 to 18 minutes, or until golden brown.
Notes:
This recipe makes 20 rolls. If you don't need that many, you can make rolls with half of the dough and cinnamon rolls with the other half! YUM!
I used a box of Jiffy Golden Yellow Cake Mix. You can substitute an equivilent amount of any cake mix you would like.
If you use a standard size box of cake mix, you need to measure out 9-ounces of mix. Do NOT use the whole box. I use a kitchen scale to weigh the cake mix.
I made crescent rolls, but you can make any shape rolls that you prefer.
Can Cake Mix Dinner Rolls be made in advance? Yes. You can bake the roll ahead of time and reheat them when you are ready to serve them.
Can Cake Mix Dinner Rolls be frozen? Yes. You can bake the rolls and freeze them for later.
Freezing unbaked yeast bread can be tricky. The yeast doesn’t always hold up after being frozen. The bread may not rise as much after freezing.
If you want to try freezing the rolls, make the bread and shape them into crescent rolls. Place the rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze immediately. Once the rolls are frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag and leave them in the freezer until you are ready to bake them. To bake, place the frozen rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let thaw and rise until doubled in size. Brush with the egg wash and bake as directed.
Frozen rolls will keep approximately 2 weeks in the freezer.
