Family Style Calzone - this casserole is a favorite at our house. It is super simple to make and everyone loves it! Pizza dough stuffed with ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, and your favorite pizza toppings and baked. Top the baked calzone with some warm spaghetti sauce and prepare to be wowed! Serve with a simple salad and you are set!
Preheat oven to 425ºF. Lightly spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Press one can of pizza dough in the bottom and up the sides the baking dish.
Mix together all ricotta, parmesan Italian seasoning, and egg white.
Top the crust with half of the mozzarella cheese. Top with half of your pizza toppings. Spread the ricotta mixture over the toppings. Top the ricotta with more pizza toppings and the rest of the mozzarella cheese.
Place the remaining can of pizza dough over the top of the filling and press all around the edge to seal with the bottom crust. Cut a few slits in the top crust with a sharp knife.
Bake for 20 minutes. Brush the crust with olive oil and sprinkle with Italian seasoning. Bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, until golden brown.
Allow the calzone to cool slightly before cutting. Serve with pizza or warm spaghetti sauce.
Notes:
You can use any of your favorite pizza toppings - pepperoni, sausage, olives, bell peppers, mushrooms, ham, pineapple, spinach - anything goes.
This makes a lot of food. Feel free to cut the recipe in half and bake in a 9-inch baking dish.
I used two cans of Pillsbury regular pizza dough.
If you don't want to layer the cheese and toppings, you can just mix all of the filling ingredients together and spread over the crust.
