1(10-oz)can Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies, drained well
1(12-oz)package Hawaiian rolls
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400ºF.
Cut each Hawaiian roll into 4 slices. Place bread on a baking sheet and cook for 5 minutes. Set aside.
In a large skillet, cook pork sausage over medium-high heat until crumbled and no longer pink. Drain excess fat. Add Worcestershire sauce, a can of Rotel diced tomatoes and green chiles, and Velveeta cheese. Stir just until combined.
Spread meat mixture onto each piece of toasted bread. You can freeze them at this point.
Bake the toasts for an additional 10 to 12 minutes.
Notes:
I use Jimmy Dean sausage. You can use any brand or flavor of sausage that you enjoy.
I like to use hot pork sausage, but mild sausage also works great.
Can substitute turkey sausage.
If you don’t like sausage? Feel free to substitute ground beef.
Do not overheat the Velveeta. You just want it warm enough to stir into the sausage. Overheating the Velvetta will make queso dip!
Can I use cheddar cheese instead of Velveeta? We recommend using Velveeta because it melts wonderfully and adds so much flavor to the meat mixture. If you prefer to not use Velveeta you can substitute cheddar cheese.
Use gluten-free bread for a gluten-free recipe.
Feel free to add your favorite spices to the cheese mixture: oregano, garlic salt, or red pepper flakes are all great additions.
Hanky Panky recipes traditionally use cocktail rye bread. I've had a hard time finding the cocktail bread over the past few years, so I substituted sliced Hawaiian Rolls.
You can substitute party pumpernickel bread, English muffins, or slider buns.
Serve the meat mixture on hamburger buns for sandwiches at lunch or dinner.
Can I freeze Hanky Panky appetizers? Yes. Assemble the toasts and place them in a single layer on a baking pan. Place the pan in the freezer. Once the toasts are frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.
