Tiramisu Love Cake

Tiramisu Love Cake - all the flavors of tiramisu in a cake. Cake mix, sweetened ricotta, Kahula topped with a chocolate pudding, Cool Whip and Kahula frosting. This is SO good! Can make ahead for party!

While this isn't a true "tiramisu" cake, it does have all the flavors of tiramisu. This is super easy to make. It starts with a box of cake mix (I used Duncan Hines) and adds a layer of sweetened ricotta cheesecake batter. The layers magically reverse while the cake bakes. The top layer is a mixture of Kahlua, chocolate pudding and cool whip. It was so light and delicious. I could just eat the top layer by itself! This is the kind of cake that gets better as it sits. It is a great dessert to make ahead for a party. We both "loved" this cake!

serves 12
(Printable Recipe)

  • 1 package chocolate cake mix, plus eggs and oil called for on package
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup Kahlua
  • 32 oz ricotta cheese
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 (5.1 oz.) package instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 Tbsp Kahlua
  • 1 cup cold milk
  • 1 (8oz) container Cool Whip

Preheat oven to 350. Spray a 9×13 inch pan with nonstick spray, set aside.

Using a hand mixer, mix together cake mix, eggs, oil, water and 1/4 cup Kahlua. Pour batter into prepared 9x13-inch pan.

Beat together the ricotta cheese, eggs, sugar, and vanilla until smooth with a hand mixer. Carefully spread mixture over cake batter.

Bake for 1 hour. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before frosting.

Whisk together the pudding mix, milk and 1 tablespoon of Kahlua.  Carefully fold the Cool Whip into the pudding until thoroughly combined. Spread the pudding mixture over the top of the cooled cake.

Cover the cake and refrigerate at least 6 hours before serving.

  5. This is in the oven and I'm scared. :( looks like the cheese layer is getting squished into the middle as the cake comes up around the sides. I'll let you know final verdict.

  7. Can this be made using lady fingers instead of the cake mix?

  8. I didn't put the water in the cake mix only the egg, oil and 1/4 cup Kalua. Was I supposed to make the cake mix as regular, 1 1/4 cup water, eggs, oil and Kalua?

    1. I did cake mix, eggs called for on box, oil called for on box and 1/4 cup Kahlua.

    2. Steph, I am a long time fan & love your recipes! I think some of the confusion is due to the fact that the ingreds. list "1 cup water" but the "water" isn't mentioned in the narrative steps. Please let me know if the water is in or out :o) I can't wait to make this insanely delicious looking cake! Thank you...

  9. Hi,
I have a question about this cake - in the photo, the cream (light color) is on the bottom but your recipe states to put the cake batter in the pan first. Does the cake rise above the cream layer or is the recipe in the wrong order?
    Hope to hear from you.
    Thanks,
    Roberta

    1. As I said in the narrative above the recipe - the layers do reverse while cooking.

  10. Will this set? Mine has been in the oven an hour and it still jiggles in the middle.

  11. My layers did not reverse. I'm wondering if it was the chocolate cake mix I used. It called for butter/eggs/milk instead of oil/eggs/water.
Also, It has completely filled my 9x13 and there is no room for the Cool Whip/pudding layer!
I'll bet it's still going to taste good though!!

    1. I didn't use a butter cake mix, so that could be the issue.
