Pin This RecipeThis is the last recipe from our Christmas ham. I always look forward to finishing off the ham with a nice big bowl of white beans and a slice of cornbread. This recipe is super simple. It uses a pound of dried beans and simmers all day in the crockpot with a big ham bone. The Honey Baked Ham store sells ham bones year-round (found that out on twitter). If you don’t have a ham bone, use some ham shanks, ham hocks or just some chopped up ham. I love the creaminess of white beans combined with the saltiness of the ham. This is comfort food at its best!
Slow Cooker Ham & White Beans
Equipment:
Ingredients:
- 1 lb package dried northern beans
- 1 ham bone, hocks, shanks or diced ham (about 1 pound)
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 6 cups water
- salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Rinse and sort the beans for any pebbles. Add the rinsed beans, onion powder, salt, pepper, and ham to the crockpot. Add water. Cover and cook on low about 8 hours, until beans are tender.
- Remove ham bone, shanks or hocks and pull off the meat. Add meat to the crockpot and mix. Serve with cornbread.

I made these beans and added carrots and celery, 2 bay leaves and my homemade chicken stock…yummy
I have a hambone in the freezer. Would I need to thaw it or can it be added from frozen? Thank you!
I think it would be fine cooking from frozen.
Can you use Lima beans instead of northern? And do you soak them or just rinse?
You can try it with lima beans. No need to soak the beans, just rinse and add to the slow cooker.
Made these beans last night, and they were delicious! I used a cubed ham steak (about a pound), 1 small chopped onion rather than onion powder, added 1/2 tsp of smoked paprika and cooked them for 22 minutes in the instant pot. They are delish served over rice! Thank you for the recipe.
Love this recipe, I add a diced onion and a couple of diced carrots, the onion adds flavor the carrots add color. I freeze the leftovers in one cup servings, perfect for one person.
Yum
