Meow Monday – Sherbert

Last Thursday my heart shattered into a million pieces. My sweet Sherbert went to heaven. We found out the week before that she had kidney failure. She was in the hospital and improving, but she couldn’t go on any longer. She was ready to go see Marmalade and her sister, Pumpkin.

We adopted Sherbert and her sister, Pumpkin, in the Fall of 2000. They had been abandoned on the side of the interstate. Someone brought them to the vets office and Chicken Legs insisted we adopt them.

Sherbert had lots of nicknames, as most pets do. Bert, Bertie Bert, Sherbie, Turbo, Turbo Sherbo, Turbie, Bertie B, Sweet B, Sweet Pea, B B, just to name a few.

She loved to sit in my lap. She purred so loud. She was a little purr-colator.

She didn’t like to be held. She turned into the tasmanian devil if you attempted to pick her up.

She was fast as lightning. Hence the nickname, Turbo.

She loved to roll around on the rugs.  She loved burlap – went absolutely crazy rubbing all over it.

She always got in my overnight bag when I was packing.

She would stand up to check things out.

She LOVED to get in drawers.

She could jump from the floor to the top of Chicken Legs’ dresser – about 5 feet.

She loved to sit in boxes.

She spent most of her days during the winter in front of the heater.

Her favorite human food was ham and cheez-its. I left my ham sandwich unattended one day and she stole the ham out of it and ate it! I had to start making a plate of ham for her at lunch.

Sherbert was always special to me. She went through a lot in her short life and was a tough little cookie.
I had almost 14 wonderful years with Sherbert. She was my everything. I loved her more than anything in this world.
It will be strange going into the bedroom and not seeing her sleeping on the bed. I will miss her meowing at me, sleeping by my side and petting her.
She has only been gone a few days, but we all miss her tremendously.
 “We’re the best ones.”

  1. Rest well, sweet Sherbert! As I had mentioned to you a few weeks ago, she reminds me so much of our Foster, whom we lost 3 weeks ago. They are playing together with all those who have gone before. Sherbert and Foster were very much alike, in their personalities as well as their coloring. We still hear him in our other cats' voices and see him in their actions. You will also find her looking after you when you see and hear Jack and Fluffy. Peace and joyful memories to you and Chicken Legs, as well as the rest of the family. She is always with you in your heart!

  2. I am so sorry! Pets hold such special places in our hearts. Sherbert sounds a lot like our Panther (who doesn't like to be held either). I love Meow Mondays……praying for all who loved her.

  3. Steph, I read the news at work and people asked me what was wrong, because I just started crying. I look forward to reading/seeing the fur faces every Monday. They (and you) make my day! Thank you for sharing your babies with us every Monday. I know the pain you must be feeling. Hugs, purrs & prayers, my friend!

  4. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I lost Molly B, a pure black cat that was so fast, she could catch anything that came into her yard and Mobie, a giant tabby male found abandoned at a gas station, hence the name Mobie. That was 10 years ago with Mobie and 6 years for Molly B. I still miss them and tears come when I think of them. I have adopted several abandoned cats since their passing, but I never forget the ones who came into my life and shared it for a few years. I now have two rescued cats, a big grey male named Dusty and a black Persian named Blackie. I think we have adopted another. We have had a cat hanging around since the neighbors left. We are feeding him/her and we leave our garage door ajar so he has a place to get out of the snow. Once he gets used to us and our two cats, we will have another, . He has no name right now. While we love our current cats, I never forget those who left us. I buried all of them in the back garden next to our greenhouse, with a bush over them and a plaque with their names and how long they shared our life.

  5. I'm soooo sorry for your lost. Hope she will be fine in the cat heaven purring a lot and sleep all day

  6. I am sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is but you gave Sherbert a great life and she enriched yours so hold onto that.

  7. I'm so very sorry for your loss. As so many others have stated, I look forward to your Meow Mondays. 🙂 I had to say goodbye to my 21 year old Cali in October. It's so hard. I'm sorry!

  8. I'm so sorry. Sherbert was quite a beauty, and you will always remember her. We've had an orange boy named Kato for 16 years. He's perfectly goofy, sweet, and full of fun, even in his "advanced" years. He's been FIV positive for many years, but has NEVER been ill. I think orange cats are particularly delightful (my experience). You have given your kitties a wonderful home!!!

  9. Iam crying right now love to see your Monday Meows. My Piccolo looked like Sherbert
    thats been gone 10years.

  10. So sorry – our pets are just an extension of our family- we love them as much! A great tribute to Sherbert.

  11. I am so sorry for your loss. I cried when I read about Sherbie. You loved her and she loved you. You and Chicken Legs gave her a life she would not have experienced if you had walked away from the vets office on that special day. Love and hugs.

  12. I'm soooo sorry for your loss. She was such a beautiful little girl. Meow Mondays just won't be the same.
    (((Hugs)))
