Easy Dry Rub Chicken Recipe

Sweet & Spicy is one of my favorite flavor combinations!! While I called this recipe Sweet and Spicy Grilled Chicken it isn’t’ really spicy per-say. It is more flavorful than spicy. The “spicy” comes from chili powder. I don’t think regular chili powder is super spicy, but it does have a nice little bump of spice. If you are worried about the heat, you can certainly reduce the chili powder.

How to Cook Chicken on the Grill

This chicken is super easy to make. Start with placing the chicken breasts in a ziplock bag and gently pounding them to an even thickness. Next combine the rub ingredients – brown sugar, chili powder, seasoned salt, and garlic powder. Add the brown sugar mixture to the ziplock bag and toss to coat the chicken.

We let this Sweet and Spicy Grilled Chicken marinate in the dry rub overnight. Our philosophy is the longer the better. I like to prep the chicken before I go to bed and grill it the next day. That ensures maximum flavor!

You can use any cut of chicken you prefer – breasts, tenders, thighs, wings or drumsticks. Can use boneless or bone-in chicken. Adjust the cooking time to ensure an internal temperature of 165ºF.

How to Grill Chicken without a Grill

To cook chicken breasts without a grill, pan sear chicken for 3 to 4 minutes per side. Place chicken on a rimmed baking sheet. Cook at 400ºF for 10 minutes, until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF.

  1. Thank you for this recipe, but I have a question. You call for seasoned salt. Is this homemade or a purchased item? If purchased, what would I look for? Thank you.

  2. Just finished supper….whole family loved this! So easy to do too….I marinated the breasts in the rub for about 5 hrs and then dabbed the residual sauce on the chicken while grilling. Found it to be more sweet than spicy but overall this will become a go to!

    1. Pan sear the chicken breasts 3 or 4 minutes on each side. Place it on a baking sheet and bake at 400ºF for 10 minutes.

    1. The most accurate way to check if the chicken is done is to use a meat thermometer and cook the chicken until it reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF.
