I am a huge fan of crockpot meals, especially this time of year. I don’t know about you, but I am really busy during the holiday season. The last thing I want to worry about is dinner. This recipe is super easy and tastes great. Chicken slow-cooked in chicken gravy mix, cream of chicken soup, and chicken broth. Serve the shredded chicken over rice and dinner is done. I used Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice, and dinner was ready in less than 5 minutes after walking in the door! Can’t beat that any time of year!
How To Make Chicken & Gravy in the Crockpot
This Crockpot Chicken & Gravy is SUPER easy to make. Simply place the chicken in the slow cooker, Season the chicken with salt and pepper. I sometimes use garlic salt or seasoned salt instead of plain salt. Once the chicken is seasoned on both sides, whisk together the gravy packets and soup. Pour the soup over the chicken and cook.
Once the chicken is cooked, shred it with two forks right in the slow cooker. We like to serve the chicken over white rice. Feel free to use cooked brown rice, mashed potatoes, or egg noodles. Heck, you could even serve this over some Texas toast for a chicken & gravy sandwich. If you are eating gluten-free, I think this would be great over cauliflower rice or spaghetti squash.
I used chicken gravy mix. Feel free to use any packet of gravy mix you prefer. If you want a thinner gravy, add about ½ to 1 cup of water or chicken broth to the soup mixture. Adding some water/chicken broth is a great way to stretch the gravy. The slow cooker gravy is the BEST part of the whole recipe!

Crockpot Chicken & Gravy
Equipment:
Ingredients:
- 3 to 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1 (10.5-oz) can Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup
- 2 (0.87-oz) envelopes of chicken gravy mix
- 1/2 cup water or chicken broth, optional
- hot steamed rice
Instructions:
- Place chicken in the slow cooker and season with salt and pepper, if desired.
- Whisk together soup, gravy mix, and water (if using). Pour over chicken.
- Cover crock-pot and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours.
- Before serving break the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces. Serve over hot steamed rice.
Notes:
- Do NOT make the gravy. You are only using the dry mix.
- Can use chicken thighs or tenderloins in place of chicken breasts.
- Can use frozen chicken breasts.
- You will need to cook on the higher end of the cooking time if using frozen chicken.
- Can add frozen vegetables to the mixture.
- I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup in this dish to control the sodium.

I also would like to know if this can be cooked in an Instant Pot?
I’ve only made this in a slow cooker. You can use the slow cook setting on your Instant Pot. I don’t know what or if any adjustments would need to be made to use the pressure cooker setting.
My chicken is frozen and want to make this for dinner with it come out right.
yes
Hi, my slow cooker broke. Would I be able to make this on the stove instead?
Yes – put all the ingredients in a Dutch oven and cook until the chicken is cooked.
Can you make it in an instapot instead?
Holy Moly!!! Soul food! I can’t believe something this easy can taste this good. Served over Mashed Potatoes with homemade biscuits. My husband was over the moon! Going in my “forever cookbook”!
So this is gonna be a weird comment I don’t have any chicken breast or thighs but I have 2 cans of canned chicken would that work and how would I do that?? I really want to make this tonight!
We make this all the time and sometimes use the canned shredded chicken. Tastes great, kids LOVE it! Over rice tastes good, but we prefer to put it over mashed potatoes.
This was sooooo good. I use cream of chicken with herbs instead of just cream of chicken. Soooooo good
So pleased I found this! Always looking for easy ways to make dinner and this is such an easy one! I subbed a can of cream of mushroom cause it was all I had and I added some diced up bell peppers to give it a slight tang. It is cold and rainy out so I wanted comfort food that would be easy and the husband is tired of chili and soups! I will definitely try it over egg noodles as one suggested as that sounds like it would change the taste of the meal, make is seem like a different dish. Great recipe.
I’m making this for dinner tonight and plan to serve it over egg noodles cause my littles don’t like rice or mashed potatoes (weird I know!). It smells amazing already! I doubled it because we have 6 to feed… 2 of those hungry teenagers. I doubled the entire thing but added a block of cream cheese just to add a little creamy-ness to it and subbed in 1 can of cream of celery because that’s what I had here. I also added a bunch of jarlic because we’re big garlic fans at our home and just a tad bit of diced onion that I already had diced and portioned out in the freezer. As another suggested I’m throwing in some baby spinach towards the end to add some veggies to it (we’ve had sweet peas already the last 2 nights). My other half is a night shifter so I always pack his food up for that night & the next night after I’m done cooking. Can’t wait to eat tonight and super glad I found it!
How was the taste when you added the block of cream cheese?
Oh I love the idea of adding cream cheese!
Tasted great. Any recommendations on how to increase the amount of gravy, maybe more chicken broth and/or another can of cream of chicken?
Yes and yes. You can also just double all the ingredients except for the chicken.
SAVORY BISCUIT HELP PLEASE! How do you get the savory biscuits like that? I have canned biscuits and want to make them savory to serve on the side. I already have my chicken in the crock pot, I used 80% of a can of chicken broth and can’t decide if I’m sorry I did or not – because it’s much thinner than the video. We shall see.
The biscuits on the video are just refrigerated Pillsbury Grands biscuits. I also like to use frozen Pillsbury biscuits.
It’s very yummy and simple to make. Enjoyed it. I used Cream of Mushroom soup because I could not find Cream of Chicken. It was YUMMO!!
I only have 1 envelope of chicken gravy will it still taste good?
This is a go to recipe in my house. I use the cream of chicken with herbs soup and the regular cream of chicken soup and they both are out of this world.
