Easy Cake Mix Bars

I got this recipe from my Mom when we were down for the holidays. She said these Gooey German Chocolate Bars were great, so I decided to give them a try. OMG! She was right. These are CRAZY good!!! Coconut, pecans, chocolate cake filled with an ooey gooey filling of cream cheese, butter and powdered sugar.

These bars only take a few minutes to make. The hardest part about this recipe is waiting on the bars to cool. These are better after they have been baked, cooled and refrigerated for a few hours. We tried them warm and then cooled. We both preferred the bars after they had been in the refrigerator for a few hours. The flavors had time to come together and you could really taste the coconut and pecans.

How to Make Gooey German Chocolate Bars

As I said, this dessert is super simple to make. Sprinkle coconut and pecans in the bottom of a cake pan. Prepare cake mix according to package directions and pour over coconut and pecans. Mix together cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar with a handheld mixer. Pour over cake mix and bake. Let the cake cool completely before cutting into bars.

  • The bars will keep 4 to 5 days in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
  • You can substitute walnuts for the pecans if you prefer.

You can cut the dessert into as many bars as you need. We usually cut them into about 16 bars, but you can make the bars as big or as small as you prefer. Perfect for a potluck or party! Here are a few more recipes from the blog that go great with these easy cake mix bars:

  1. I just made these-they are in the oven. I’m sure they will be delicious, however, the cream cheese mixture wasn’t pourable. It was like a thick cream cheese frosting.

I had everything at room temperature, but had to spoon it on in globs. I could not even spread it over the cake mix. Any idea what may have gone wrong?
