How To Make Pineapple Upside Down Dump Cake

This cake is super easy to make. Just dump the pineapple and cherries in the bottom of the cake pan. Top with some brown sugar and cake mix. Finally, top with butter and bake. No mixing, no extra dirty dishes, no spoons, just one pan. I had this ready to bake before my oven preheated! Woohoo!

Just a note about the cake mix. Do not make the cake. You are going to use the dry cake mix straight out of the box.

  1. I baked this cake last evening and my sister’s and I ate it today. It’s Great. So simple to make. The only change I made was the butter. I melted two sticks of butter to drizzle on top. Very Very Good. Thank you

    1. The best way I’ve found is to melt the butter and mix in the cake mix. This will be crumbly. Then evenly distribute over the fruit mix and sprinkle the top with chopped nuts if desired. Using this method there will be no dry cake mix in your cake (which personally, I do not like!) I hope you like it this way as much as I do!

    1. Do you flip the cake upside down? Or only when serving? I’ve made tons of dumpcakes, but wouldn’t think of flipping them over. Or would it work because no liquid?

    2. I made this but didn’t rise , looked more like a cobbler instead of a cake . I look at cake mix wasn’t out of date . I cooked it 15 minutes longer cake mix didn’t blend ??? Smells great tho .

      1. It is a dump cake – it isn’t going to be like a traditional cake because you don’t make the cake batter. It should look like the photos.

  2. Just took this out of the oven…I did play with it a little. Used a pineapple cake mix and pineapple tid-bits. Smells heavenly!! Letting it cool just a little bit before trying. Thank you for the recipe idea plainchicken!!

  3. I don’t have a can of 🍒 pie filling but I do have a small jar of cherries 🍒 & a bag of leftover Blueberry pie filling.

I was thinking about having one can of crushed pineapple mixed with a blueberries then after I put the dry Cake mix on top with the butter 🧈

I was going to put slices of pineapple on top with a few cherries on top I only have a small amount

  4. I used pineapple slices and we didn’t have cherries. We eat a bit light, so I halved the recipe and made it in a 7×11 glass pyrex baking dish (I used a kitchen scale to divide the cake mix in half). Everyone loved it (husband and 4 children). Next time I’ll make it in an 8×8 pan for 1/2 the recipe. Thumbs up… we’ll make it again. Thanks.

  5. I used 1 can crushed and 1 can crushed cause that’s what I had in my pantry. I cut the butter thin and it covered the entire cake. YUM! Quick, easy and delicious.

  6. Just follow the recipe as it reads! It’s not that hard! Best thing I’ve ever ate!! The cake mix still crumbly is the best part! 😋😋😋

  7. I cooked it in an 9″x9″ baking pan & melted the butter. Poured the butter over the dry cake mix. Came out thicker and better. No dry cake mix like the last time I made a dump cake. Oh, and left the cherries out. Just too sweet for us.

  8. Do you dice the canned pineapple Or use crushed or even tidbits??? I’m not finding diced pineapple in cans.

      1. can anyone attest that the cake came out ok with NO liquid over than the drained pineapple?

    1. I put the juice in with crushed pineapple it was awesome maybe a little syrupy but it was awesome I also used pineapple cake.

  9. Making this now, I put it in a glass 9×13, will the bake time vary? It's been 25 minutes and still very lite in color, not brown

    1. All ovens are different, so baking times may vary. As you can see from the photos, my cake did not get very brown.

    2. I made this today for a church dinner that was canceled. My husband was happy to bring it back home for us, and everyone declared it a winner! So easy to make, and soooo good!

      1. Crushed pineapple needs drained or it will be soupy, marachino cherries not canned pie cherries, butter sliced thin to put on top of dry cake mix and yes it is enough to make it moist. Its very good.
