Roasted Garlic in the Microwave

I found this tip on Real Simple’s website. I love roasted garlic but hate that it takes almost an hour to make. I tried this out using my Pampered Chef deep covered baker and it was really quick & easy (not that roasting garlic in the oven is hard!). I do prefer the color that the garlic turns in the oven, but this method is great if you are running short on time.
I used the garlic for dinner last night in one of our favorite dishes – Smoky Chicken Pasta. It was great!!

Roasting Garlic

It takes 45 minutes to roast garlic in the oven but less than 8 in the microwave.

Slice off the top of the head to reveal all the cloves.

Place the head in a small, deep dish, season with salt and pepper, and drizzle with 2 tablespoons of good olive oil.

Spoon 2 tablespoons of water into the bottom of the dish, cover it with plastic wrap, and cook at medium power for 7 to 7 ½ minutes.

Let stand for a few minutes before unwrapping.

  1. MEDIUM HEAT, UUUHHH HUH. HUH HUH. DUH HUH HUH. I melted my plastic container, and toxic smoke filled my studio. MEDIum. UM UM.

  2. Awesome recipe. Yea, started on high, caught my error and dropped to medium. Guess I should learn to read. LOL. Excellent recipe and thanks a million!

  3. I used 40% power – microwaved for 2 minutes, checked, 2 minutes more, then 30 seconds more. So 4 1/2 seconds total at 40% power. Came out perfectly. I do prefer oven roasted garlic, but I was in a hurry and also it was 98 here today. Too hot for the oven!

  4. I just tried this and it was really yummy. Just make sure to check every 30 seconds-1 minute and that you only use 50% power 🙂

  5. I too will be going with the 1 hour in the oven method since it's going to take WAY more than 1 hour to get the smell of smoke out of my house. My house smells like it, I smell like it and even my 3 year old son smells like baked in smoke. I actually have a weaker microwave that isn't the highest power to being with and I put it on 50% for 6 minutes. I had the darkest gray smoke pouring out of my microwave around 3 minutes. I like Elle was almost afraid to open the microwave and thought that I would have flames coming out at me. So wish I had read the comments 🙁

  6. You may want bold the medium power and explain in the directions that high will burn. I also had a horrible experience and now have a kitchen full of acidic burned garlic smoke…yuck!

  7. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
I had only run it for 3 minutes when smoke started billowing out of the microwave. My entire house smells like a burned mess. I don't even want to open the microwave door to see what happened in there.

  8. Carol- I did the exact same thing and then realized the recipe says Medium power level. I adjusted to 50% power and that worked with well with only 6 minutes. If you want to play it safe, microwave a little at a time until you figure out the best total time for your microwave.

  9. Zoiks! I tried this, following the directions exactly with the exception of using a plate on top instead of plastic wrap, and I think it may have caught fire. All of a sudden everything smelled charred and my garlic was black as night. Watch carefully!!
