Cherry Dump Cake With Pie Filling

If you like cherry pie or cherry cobbler then you are going to LOVE this Cherry Cheesecake Dump Cake. Chessmen butter cookies, cherry pie filling, whipped cream cheese, cake mix, and butter. Simply dump everything in the pan and bake. Ridiculously easy to make and even easier to eat! Whip this up the next time you need an easy dessert! It is sure to be a hit!

What is a dump cake?

A dump cake is a dessert similar to a cobbler but with a cake mix topping. It is called a dump cake because it is prepared by dumping the ingredients into a cake pan without mixing.

How to Make Cherry Cheesecake Dump Cake

This dessert is effortless to make with only a few simple ingredients. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Add a layer of Pepperidge Farm Chessmen Butter Cookies to the bottom of the pan. Pour two cans of cherry pie filling over the cookies and spread to cover. Add dollops of whipped cream cheese over the pie filling.

Sprinkle a box of cake mix over the cream cheese. Place slices of unsalted butter evenly over the top of the cake mix. Make sure to cover the entire pan. Bake in a preheated oven until golden brown.

  • Do NOT stir the ingredients! Just dump the ingredients into the pan.
  • Do NOT make the cake. You are going to just use the dry ingredients.
    • I use vanilla cake mix. Yellow cake mix, white cake mix, or chocolate cake mix would also work great.
  • I place slices of butter on top of the cake mix. You can use an equal amount of melted butter and drizzle it evenly over the cake mix.
  • Variations/Additions:

  • Don’t like cherry? You can use any flavor of pie filling that you enjoy. Blueberry, strawberry, peach, or apple pie filling are all delicious in this recipe.
  • If you have some spots of dry cake mix after baking, drizzle melted butter over those spots and bake for an additional minute or two.
  • Can dump cake be made in a slow cooker? Yes! Layer the ingredients in the crock pot. Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on low for 4 hours or high for 2 hours.
    •  Condensation can form on the lid of the crock pot and then drop onto the cake, add a few layers of paper towels just under the lid to absorb that additional liquid. 
  • How long is dump cake good for? The cake will keep up to 5 days covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator.
    • Store leftovers in an airtight container.
    • Reheat each serving in the microwave.
  • Can I freeze dump cake? Yes. Bake the cake and cool it completely. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
    • When ready to serve, thaw the cake in the fridge overnight. Reheat each serving in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (7.25-oz) package Pepperidge Farm Chessmen Butter Cookies
  • 2 (21-oz) cans cherry pie filling
  • 1 (12-oz) container whipped cream cheese
  • 1 box vanilla cake mix
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, cut into thin slices

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Layer cookies on the bottom of the baking dish.
  • Spread pie filling over cookies.
  • Using a small cookie scoop, dollop cream cheese over pie filling and swirl with a knife.
  • Spread the cake mix over the cream cheese.
  • Place slices of butter evenly over the top of the cake mix. Make sure to cover the entire pan.
  • Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until golden brown.
