I am a huge fan of crockpot meals, especially this time of year. I don’t know about you, but I am really busy during the holiday season. The last thing I want to worry about is dinner. This recipe is super easy and tastes great. Chicken slow-cooked in chicken gravy mix, cream of chicken soup, and chicken broth. Serve the shredded chicken over rice and dinner is done. I used Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice, and dinner was ready in less than 5 minutes after walking in the door! Can’t beat that any time of year!
How To Make Chicken & Gravy in the Crockpot
This Crockpot Chicken & Gravy is SUPER easy to make. Simply place the chicken in the slow cooker, Season the chicken with salt and pepper. I sometimes use garlic salt or seasoned salt instead of plain salt. Once the chicken is seasoned on both sides, whisk together the gravy packets and soup. Pour the soup over the chicken and cook.
Once the chicken is cooked, shred it with two forks right in the slow cooker. We like to serve the chicken over white rice. Feel free to use cooked brown rice, mashed potatoes, or egg noodles. Heck, you could even serve this over some Texas toast for a chicken & gravy sandwich. If you are eating gluten-free, I think this would be great over cauliflower rice or spaghetti squash.
I used chicken gravy mix. Feel free to use any packet of gravy mix you prefer. If you want a thinner gravy, add about ½ to 1 cup of water or chicken broth to the soup mixture. Adding some water/chicken broth is a great way to stretch the gravy. The slow cooker gravy is the BEST part of the whole recipe!

Crockpot Chicken & Gravy
Equipment:
Ingredients:
- 3 to 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1 (10.5-oz) can Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup
- 2 (0.87-oz) envelopes of chicken gravy mix
- 1/2 cup water or chicken broth, optional
- hot steamed rice
Instructions:
- Place chicken in the slow cooker and season with salt and pepper, if desired.
- Whisk together soup, gravy mix, and water (if using). Pour over chicken.
- Cover crock-pot and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours.
- Before serving break the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces. Serve over hot steamed rice.
Notes:
- Do NOT make the gravy. You are only using the dry mix.
- Can use chicken thighs or tenderloins in place of chicken breasts.
- Can use frozen chicken breasts.
- You will need to cook on the higher end of the cooking time if using frozen chicken.
- Can add frozen vegetables to the mixture.
- I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup in this dish to control the sodium.

Can I double just the gravy portion and add potatoes like 2 hours before done? Or is it better with mashed potatoes?
you can serve this with whatever you would like.
Hi can I cook this for 2 hours on HIGH rather than 4 hours on LOW? Thanks
yes
Do we prepare the can cream of chicken with the one can of water or just pour the can in!
just pour the can in
I put redskins and carrots in about an hour before finishing. I added a cup of chicken broth to keep vegetables submerged. It came out great.
This is awesome! I’d love to use more chicken for bigger servings . My family loves this … how would I prepare with maybe 5-6 chicken breast in a 7qt crockpot ?
I make this about 2-3 times a month now ! 😂😂
Maybe double the recipe?
This recipe is absolutely delicious. It’s so easy and has made it into my rotation, sometimes twice a week. Thanks so much and it’s cooking again right now 😃. I can’t wait. YUM
I love this recipe, And best of all so did my husband! However, I have one issue, we cannot eat it all in one setting and he is not huge on leftovers. So, I was wondering, can this be frozen? And, if so, any advice on duration and reheating?
I’m sure it can be frozen. To reheat it, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight and reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.
Love this recipe I learned something new add chicken gravy to the soup and boom you have a delicious gravy we have left overs so I’m going to cook up noodles And easy no oven
Thank you
I also did this a pot roast I added dice onions 2cups beef broth and a Lipton onion gravy mix we had it over bake potatoes
I’m thawing chicken breasts right now for this. Going to make it tomorrow, I can’t wait to try it, it looks delicious!! I may throw some veggies in it too, and serve it over lentil noodles, that way we’ve got our protein and veggies.
Sounds delicious! Enjoy!
You can totally put frozen chicken in crock pot ans cover with all the other ingredients. Then cook on low for 6hours and 1/2 way through just pull apart the chicken so it can cook through. It’s so yummy
I don’t have gravy mix. Any substitute suggestions?
No. I’ve only made this as written.
I thought about using pork gravy mix. I have had a recipe before that combined cream of chicken and pork gravy mix and it was fantastic.
The first time I fixed this, I only had one packet of chicken gravy so I used one envelope of Lipton onion soup mix. It came out great, and now that’s how I always make it. The onion flavor adds just a little “kick” to the mild chicken flavors. In fact, it’s in the crockpot right now!
Tried this for the first time almost two years ago figuring my picky kids would love it. I was right. I always double it and use 2 packs chicken gravy mix and two packs of turkey gravy mix and always go for the low sodium chicken broth. We make this at least once month and serve it over homemade mashed potatoes. Making tonight with savory herb stove top, carrots, and cranberry sauce on the side. Yummy!
SO GOOD! I used 8 small boneless, skinless chicken thighs (family preference) and added a large jar of sliced mushrooms.
Great over rice, noodles, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, toast…..
Fabulous! I just made this for the first time and it came out great. I used Pacific Foods Gluten Free Cream of Chicken soup and two packets of McCormick Gluten Free Turkey Gravy (couldn’t find GF chicken gravy at my store) and added about a can and half of water (more than the recipe calls for) and it was perfect. The gravy thickened up and was perfect after 4.5 hours of cooking on low. Nice hearty meal with mashed potatoes, like a homemade turkey dinner taste without the hours of cooking!
Ops. I threw the chicken broth and cream or chicken in separate without mixing it 😅😅 and sprinkled the gravy mix on top ðŸ¤
It will be just fine
I’m making this in an instant pot because I’m in a crunch for time. I am cooking the rice separately and the rest of the ingredients in the instant pot. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
How did it turn out? I’m thinking of doing this as a Instant Pot meal, too!
I make this, I have my friends making this. We LOVE it! So easy and so good! Superb!
Absolutely loved this and it was so easy. A nice meal that’s fills in all the nooks and crannies. I only had turkey gravy to use but, I honestly think it would taste better with turkey gravy than the chicken gravy. I chose to put it on top of biscuits, next time I’ll try mashed potatoes. It was extremely salty from the gravy packets so, next I’m going to look for low sodium or sodium free. Thank you for the recipe.
Oh my gosh it’s in the crockpot, got 45 minutes to go.. reading the comments while I wait.. Making mashed potatoes to pour it over and southern style biscuits on the side.
Trying to be patient!
This was my first time using a slow cooker to make anything. I wanted to start with something non threatening and this recipe had all the ingredients I had at home. I used frozen chicken from the bag defrosted and cut into smaller pieces. Turned out amazing! The chicken so tender. This recipe is a keeper!
So everything else was same and you just changed out the seasoning packet? I want to try this thanks!
Hi! I cook for my gluten sensitive husband and I found a gluten free gravy from McCormick. To find it you do have to go to higher end grocery store. It taste delicious and faster to prepare the meal of course. Can’t wait to try the finished product.
Made this exactly as the recipe states, with the broth, 4.5 hours on low and it was perfection. Creamy and warm and easy over white rice. Perfect for cold nights.
4-6 hours is such a long range. Anyone know just how long?
It just depends on your slow cooker. You can check the chicken at 4 hours and keep cooking it if it isn’t done.
Is there a certain temp. that the chicken needs to get to for it to shred?
Did I read the recipe right do you only put a 1/2 cup of broth or water in it
yes
For me it took a little less than 4 hours on high with a smaller 4 quart size of crock pot and 4 large chicken thighs.
