Homemade Taco Seasoning

Homemade Taco Seasoning – SUPER easy to make and tastes 1000xs better than the packets. Chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Makes enough to replace one packet of store-bought seasoning. I like to triple or quadruple the recipe and store it in an air-tight container. Taco night never tasted so good! #taco #seasoning #glutenfree #lowcarb #ketofriendly

Recently, I’ve been noticing that I don’t like the flavor of the taco seasoning packets in the store.  The flavor is just off.  I decided to go in search of a good homemade taco seasoning and found this one on allrecipes.com  It is wonderful. I love that I can control the amount of salt in the seasoning! Some of those packets are super salty!

What’s in Homemade Taco Seasoning

This taco seasoning recipe uses chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper.

This recipe makes the same amount as a packet of taco seasoning from the store, about 3 tablespoons. This is the perfect amount for one pound of ground beef.

  • Is Homemade Taco Seasoning low-carb and keto-friendly? Yes! This homemade seasoning blend is low in carbs. There is no sugar or flour in this seasoning mix.
  • Is this taco seasoning gluten-free? Yes. There is no flour in this seasoning mix. Make sure to check the labels on the seasonings to ensure they are gluten-free. Gluten-free chili powder can be tricky to find. Look for Badia Chili Powder in the Mexican food section.
  • Feel free to adjust the seasoning blend to your personal preference.
  • Can double, triple, or quadruple the recipe and store seasoning in an air-tight container.

How to Use Homemade Taco Seasoning

This seasoning does have a kick from the red pepper flakes, but you can leave that out if you don’t want any heat.  I’ve made several of our favorite Mexican dishes with this seasoning and the flavor is fantastic. We both prefer it to the store-bought stuff. To cook one pound of hamburger, brown the meat and drain the fat. Add the seasoning and 2/3 cup of water. Simmer for about 5 or 10 minutes and serve.

Use this seasoning in any recipe that calls for a packet of taco seasoning. Here are a few of our favorite recipes from the blog that use taco seasoning:

    1. Absolutely! You can double, triple, quadruple it. Click on the “3” next to yield and slide the bar to the right to automatically calculate the amounts.

  1. The only Taco seasoning I have used for YEARS is Williams. Mom only used their chili, taco, and spaghetti seasonings for as long as I can remember. However since I now have health problems and must limit my salt intake, I am going to try this. I already make my own seasoned salt, so this will be great. Thanks

  2. Thank you for the taco seasoning recipe. I am allergic to corn so I am on a mission to making most of my on spices.

  3. We have a family spice called Babunya’s Gourmet Spice. It’s been in our family for five generations. My 87 year old mom is the face on our products. Our blended spices are All Natural, Gluten Free, with no MSG, no preservatives, or additives. It comes in three flavours:

ORIGINAL (has no heat just great taste)
    MILD (some heat)
HOT ( a bit more heat)

We blend all of our spices ourselves in Pennsylvania. They are great not only on chicken, but also steaks, pork, fish, lamb, All Game Meats, as well as soups, salads, and vegetables.

If you go to our website and click on Video Recipe you can watch some of my moms favorite dishes, and see exactly how to make them. Thanks for letting me share!

  4. This is another great addition to my spice collection. The combination of onion powder, chili powder and garlic powder will surely make this taco seasoning more delicious. I am going to make my own version this coming weekend.

  5. Tried this tonight – so good! Husband said he liked it better than the packets. Thanks for the recipe!

  6. I like to add a little potato or corn starch to mine when it's used for tacos to give it some thickening power.

  7. I've been buying my taco seasoning from my local Savory Spice, spice shop. And I agree, anything fresh makes those packets look like a joke. Such a difference.

  8. If you ever need to buy a great taco seasoning, try the one from Wick Fowler (they do the 3-Alarm Chile Mix). It doesn't have any flour or fillers. I used to get it at Fresh Market in Atlanta.

  9. I have always used my mom's recipe:
    2 generous t. cumin
1 t. oregano (gnd or flakes)
    1 t. salt
    1 t. pepper
    1/2 t. chili powder
    3 bay leaves
…for 1 lb. of hamburger and let simmer for 30 min.
Then I drain a can of Rotel and seasoned black beans to add to the beef.

  10. I've been using a similar recipe (minus blk pepper but add sugar) for a couple of years now. Not only does it taster better than package– we save $$ because I already have all the ingredients on hand!

  11. Since one packet from the store usually flavors a pound of ground beef, this whole recipe would do the same?
