Pin This RecipeOne of our new favorites is the French Onion Potato Casserole I made a few months ago. It is SO delicious. I make it all the time. I started thinking about what else I could use french onion dip in and thought about this chicken noodle casserole. I have a “Cracked Out” version that is crazy good, so I substituted the crack flavors for the french onion dip. To up the onion flavor, I topped the casserole with a can of fried onions. This was SO good. We ate this for dinner and leftover for lunch a few days. This would also be a good freezer meal. Just mix up the casserole and pop in the freezer until you are ready to serve it. Let the casserole thaw in the fridge all day. If it is still frozen when you are ready to bake, add about 15 minutes to the baking time.
French Onion Chicken Noodle Casserole
Ingredients:

- 1 (16-oz) container refrigerated French Onion Dip, sour cream based
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 12- oz egg noodles
- 1 cup crushed French fried onions
Instructions:
- Cook egg noodles according to package directions, drain.

- Combine chicken, soup, dip, and cheese. Stir in cooked egg noodles.
- Pour mixture into prepared pan. Top with crushed french fried onions.

Notes:
- This recipe uses a container of refrigerated sour cream based French onion dip, such as Dean’s, Great Value, Barbers, Heluva Good Dip, or Kraft.
- I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup in this dish to control the sodium.

- Need Gluten-free Cream of Chicken Soup? You can buy it here: https://amzn.to/3MtqQ1s
- Here is our recipe for Homemade Cream of Chicken Soup: https://www.plainchicken.com/homemade-cream-of-chicken-soup/

I loved this recipe but tweaked it a little. I send the whole bag of egg noodles, rotisserie chicken and I added a can of French Onion Soup. Gave it a little more flavor. Easy recipe.
Wonderful recipe! I made half tonight for my husband and I and froze half of the mixture to give to my daughter when she comes home from college this weekend! That way when she’s busy in classes and work she can just pop it in the oven!
Long forgotten from 7 yrs ago…don’t expect to get an answer at this point. Really enjoyed this and will use it but…what was the side on the dish in the photo…black/pinto beans? Looks delish…have a recipe for it?
THX!
BB
Field peas with green beans
So yummy!! Family agreed it should be added to our rotation. Made exactly with whole wheat egg noodles & added mixed veggies. Delish! Thank you!!
I want to make this, but can’t have sour cream. Is there a substitution for that? Sounds amazing.
Plain Greek Yogurt
I made this and added green peas to it.
My family loved it!
This is one of our favorite recipes! Don’t be afraid if you are intimidated by the amount of onion flavoring- when everything is mixed together properly, the onion does NOT dominate! It is soooooo yummy!!!!
Made this tonight and everyone loved it! My husband, my 14 year old daughter, and my 11 year old son all literally said, “This is good. This is really good.” My son isn’t much of an eater-ever- and he asked for seconds. My husband had seconds and thirds. He works 3-11 and said he would be having more when he comes home tonight.
It’s similar to most casseroles with a protein, pasta, and cream of anything soup, (like turkey tetrazzini, for example) but what I liked best was that it took just minutes to throw together using a cut up rotisserie chicken. Everyone loved the crunch and flavor kick from the french fried onions, too!
It’s nice to have something that everyone really enjoys!
It’s good but makes a TON. Really this could feed eight, keeping with instructions. I used cream of chicken with herbs.
Can you freeze the leftovers?
Yes
I made this recipe tonight and it is amazing! I made chicken in the crockpot with both cans of Cream of Chicken, 1 can of chicken broth, and one packet of Chicken Gravy. Cooked on low for 4-6 hours, long enough for the chicken to fall apart. By dinner time, I boiled and drained noodles, mixed my chicken with the rest of the recipe (Dip, Cheese & crunchy French Onion). Cooked on 350 for 30 min. and I’m still drooling over this one! Thank you for sharing.
I’m about to put this in my crockpot now😋😋
Whats the side dish shown??
Field peas with snaps
I’ve made this many times in the past as listed… I love it!! Can I use macaroni noodles instead? If so should I use more since they are smaller?
Can leftovers be frozen. This was good but it made way more than we could eat.
Yes
Loved this yummy casserole. I cut it in half and it was still to much for my small family. I served it with fresh asparagus and crescent rolls. I will make it again and the next time I will freeze half of it
This was excellent. Best chicken casserole I have made. I will make this again and again. I don’t like the ingredient list of french onion dip so I missed onion seasoning with sour cream and used half the pasta. Thank you,
This is husband’s favorite casseroleconnie
Love this hot dish. I’ve made this a few times and the family loves it. Great with a side of green beans.
This one is going into regular rotation for our family. Everyone had seconds! So good! Thanks for a new family favorite! I served it with garllic green beans and corn.
Any suggestions on HOW to cook in a crockpot? Temperature setting and how long? This has been requested for a potluck but I’m an hour away and want to keep it warm.
I would guess on LOW for a few hours.
Very easy and tasted really good! Thanks for sharing.
What would I be able to substitute the fried onions for as I can’t buy those where I live. Many thanks.
You can leave them out.
This recipe looks & sounds so delicious. In response to Rhonda’s questions about replacing the fried onions, you could swap them out for potato chips or corn flakes which I think either of them would be a great substitute.
Can’t wait to make this tonight. I bought the BIG bag of french onions at Costco, this sounds like a great way to use some 🙂 🙂 I’ll check back.
You’ll love this!
My boyfriend loves this recipe. I also add california mix veggies into it also
The first time we had this casserole, a friend made it for us after a hospital stay. I’ve been making it ever since! It is a great comfort food casserole! It does make a lot so I usually put it into two 8″ square disposable cake pans. One goes in the oven and the other goes in the freezer for a later date. I do add 2 cups of the French’s Crispy Fried Onions on top. They really make this casserole dish! I just got finished making this casserole for dinner. Can’t wait to have it! Thank you, Plain Chicken!
Very good. Made 2 8×8. Put one in the freezer for another day. The only thing I did differently was add pepper and onion powder to mixture. Shredded my own cheese because it’s creamier
Made this tonight. Super fast and easy. I used canned chicken to save time, added pepper and used a bit of milk to make it creamy. Came out great! Will definitely make it again, thanks!
This recipe is AMAZING! Its so delicious!
Our picky 5 year old ate it with no complaints and in record time! (it normally takes him FOREVER to eat dinner) He has requested it several times since I first made it!
I halved the recipe since it is just me, my boyfriend, and our 5 year old in the house. And I love that this recipe is very easy to cut in half and throw in an 8×8 or 8×6!
I have made this recipe quite a few times, even using canned chicken sometimes it was amazing.
Sometimes I sneak in some corn or peas for a vegetable, but not always.
Thank you so much for this recipe! My family of 7 loved it! If anyone is as lazy as I am when it comes to cooking and has access to shredded rotisserie chicken at the grocery store, I highly recommend it! It just so happened that I had it on hand and it was so delicious!
Stephanie, we love this recipe! A group of women and I are putting together a cookbook for our church. I was wondering if I could include this recipe if I have a citation of where it came from? Thanks!
Can you freeze this? Like a freezer meal and bake later?
Absolutely. Enjoy!
Would ranch dip work instead of onion?
Sure! Enjoy!
Do you think ranch dip would turn out ok instead of onion? trying to use what I have on hand
Super Yummy! It was a hit with everyone except the grandbaby….but what does he know….lol. Definitely will be put on the regular dinner request list. Made it exactly how the recipe said. Love trying something different and this one did not disappoint! Thank you for sharing!
I wasn’t too sure about this dish at first but the end result was delicious! My kids loved it and because of that this recipe is a keeper. I made it just like it said in the recipe, no substitutions or add ins and it was perfect! Thank you!
SO glad you enjoyed it!!! We haven't had this in a while. It is on the menu for this coming week. YUM!
Do you think mozzarella would work okay in place of the cheddar? I have some on hand…
Absolutely! Enjoy!
Just the hubs and I, I'm making this tonight for the first time, but cutting the recipe in half. Using rotisserie chicken and very excited to see how this turns out!!!
The French Onion Dip seemed a rather strange ingredient, but it really added zip to this dish. I split it into two pans and baked one and froze one. Easy and yummy. I'll make this again.
Absolutely delicious. I cooked the chicken with salt, pepper, Tony's seasoning, and a little bit of cayenne. Then I deglazed the pan I cooked the chicken in with some white wine (I just had a little Moscato). Then I mixed that sauce in before I put it in the casserole dish and I think that kind of put it over the top.

I Love this recipe! I also mix a bag of vegetable medley in there , it is delicious!
My husband and I love this recipe. I accidentally bought the fried jalepenos instead of the fried onions the first time I made it, but decided it was a nice touch lol. It's delicious if you like spicy foods.
Do you freeze before baking or after. How long do you cook when frozen?
Made this last night & it was sooo good!!
Does anyone know how well it reheats? Thinking about reheating it in the oven so the onions don't go soggy on me.
PS – we made it according to directions & had way more than 10 servings. VERY filling, but oh so delicious!!
What is a serving size and how many calories would that be? My family LOVED it, but I am trying to log it in my food diary.
Any idea how many calories for what size serving? It is VERY yummy, just trying to log it in my food diary.
I am going to make this tonight with ground beef instead of chicken. Sounds so yummy I can't wait
Has anyone ever made this and frozen it? I have been cooking for a family in need and its easiest to provide several frozen meals. Just wondering if it will reheat well.
Also aprox how many chicken breasts is 4 cups?
how many pounds of chicken should i buy?
how many pounds of chicken should I buy?
Like Dean`s French Onion Dip in the Frig section? Not familiar with the packet kind?? Since you mix it with Sour Cream, it should be. That`s my hubby`s fave!
Yes – the sour cream dip in the refrigerator section. Enjoy!
I discovered this recipe on Pinterest several months ago and it is now on my favorites list! The onion dip is a great addition to many casseroles!
What is the size of one serving?
Wondering if anyone tried this with leftover ham instead of the chicken?
Made this tonight and it was excellent. It made a lot so I made two 8X8 dishes and put one in the freezer. I added extra cheddar cheese on top before I put on the french fried onions. This one is a keeper for sure!!
Do you think this would work with a different topping, like crushed crackers? I don't have french fried onions on hand.
Sure! Crackers, cornflakes – or you could even cook it without any topping. Enjoy!
Do you think this would be good with a different topping, possibly crushed crackers? I do not have french fried onions on hand
Sure! You can even cook it without any topping. Enjoy!
I used these crazy looking Italian Trottole pasta and added broccoli and sliced carrots. Yummy in your tummy!
This is so good! Served w side of sweet peas. Delish!
I made this and LOVED it! I would like to take it to a pot luck. Do you think its possible to make in the crock pot?
I think it would be fine cooked in the crock pot.
Any suggestions for sides?
I made it with roasted broccoli. The next day, I heated the casserole and broccoli together and mixed it up….delicious!!!
Are the noodles boiled before you bake? I haven't seen that listed anywhere in the recipe?
It is the first line of the directions – you cook them according to the package directions and drain them.
Can you make day before and refrigerate?
Absolutely!
What is the side you served with this recipe in the picture?
It is just a side of field peas.
Can this be made as a freezer meal? It sounds delicious and I would love to add it to our menu for when baby comes. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!!
I think it would be fine to freeze it.
Wow! This was really good! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! It was a huge hit in our household!
Made this for dinner tonight and it was delicious! It was a hit with the entire family. I boiled the chicken breasts before chopping them, used Great Value French Onion Dip and doubled the French fried onions on the top. Great comfort food recipe for the fall season 🙂
I was wondering if it would be weird to use rotisserie chicken for this.
I always use rotisserie chicken. Always comes out wonderfully.
Could you prepare this ahead of time and freeze before baking?
In the description before the recipe itself it says you can freeze.
My first comment on PC.. this turned out surprisingly good!! Only a couple minor changes based on our preferences.. I used a tighter noodle, rotini.. and Cream of Celery so the flavor wasn't so strong.. heading into the baking step, I really thought this was going to be really salty.. after baking, it was perfect (for our family's taste buds).. thanks for another great recipe. 🙂
so glad you enjoyed it!
This is our favorite go to casserole ! You know it’s been a rough day when I fix this, because it’s pure comfort food to make everyone feel better ! Never any leftover.
this was delicious, thanks so much! served w a side of peas.
This turned out great! So much flavor! My husband kept commenting on how delicious it tasted. Thank you for posting this recipe! I ran across this on pinterest. I used Colby and Monterery Jack cheese as I cannot have Cheddar cheese and used 2 cups french fried onion vs. the 1 cup. I will be adding this to my menu planner. 🙂
Oh thank you for this recipe. I have been wondering what was for supper tonight. This is it! Sounds so yummy!
I ran across this on Pinterest, and you made me stop in my tracks and lick my lips. Then I almost licked the screen. Just kidding (kind of).
This is on the menu plan for this week. I have the French Onion Dip with Bacon on hand, and no cheddar cheese so planning on Monteray Jack instead. Can't wait till Thursday to make it 🙂 And I use canned chicken all the time but live in an area where the Grabill County Meats are readily available so use that brand.
I wonder if you can use other kind of cheese.
Yum mine is in the oven right now. 🙂 I used canned chicken for mine. 🙂 it is going to be amazing. I tasted it. Efore it went into the oven :p
How was it with the canned chicken? i am making this tonight and i opted to use the canned chicken to save some time and money
Love this recipe. I make it without the chicken though. I added more French onions. Kids love it
My mom made this a few nights ago. Very delish.
I make this all the time for dinner during the winter. It’s my go-to. I didn’t read the Ingredients list thoroughly so I needed up buying Lays French onion dip in the glass jar, and left everything else the same. I also use a ready to go rotisserie chicken from my grocery store. But the jar, – It’s honestly better that way. I tried the sour cream based and was NOT a fan. The jar works just as well. Amazing recipe.
Just wanted you to know, I made this last night and it was sooo good!! Thanks for the recipe, everyone loved it and it's dinner again tonight!
For the french onion dip, is it just the dip mix? or do I get it in the cold section. Actually I just bought the dip mix and then bought sour cream in case it was dip and not just the mix. So I guess my question is, should I mix the dip mix with the sour cream or just use the seasoning from the mix? 🙂
This recipe uses the French onion dip – so use the sour cream and the mix. I use Kraft french onion dip.
Can I use the greek yogurt french onion dip?
I used the container version–already a dip.
Absolutely loved it! Next round I’m going to add some green beans. But this was amazing! Great casserole on a long cold weekend! I get sick of doing chili so this is a great breakaway on a cold Wisconsin frozen weekend! I will definitely be keeping this in my rotation!! Added crescent rolls, what a great dinner! Looking forward to leftovers for lunch! 😋
This has become a staple in our home. My husband, who gates onions btw, LOVES this recipe. Everytime I ask what to make he suggests this. I would say I cook this probably 2x monthly all year long. It keeps as great left overs too! I have also made it in advance and frozen it, without the onion topping and it’s great!
Stephanie@Plain Chicken,
The recipe does not state what size of cream of chicken soup to use! Two cans of what size???
It lists 2 ( 10.75 oz cans) cream chicken soup
10 1/2 ounce size. Unless a recipe specifically says a size, I always go with the regular can size.
It came out really well. The french fried onions on top gave a nice flavor. I think I will add a can of mushrooms next time.
Two cans of Cream of Chicken? What size cans?
I am glad to see others use french onion dip in casseroles…going to have to start using the french onion fries on top…yum!
Wonderful comfort meal. This meal is perfect for fall. Catherine xo
Top w Fritos OR French onions?!?
