These BBQ Pork Steam Buns are off the charts delicious! Just as good as the buns I’ve eaten at Chinese restaurants. You MUST try this recipe ASAP!
Equipment to Make Homemade Steam Buns

How to Make BBQ Pork Steam Buns with Refrigerated Biscuits
These buns are ridiculously easy to make with only two ingredients. Yes! Two ingredients! I took a MAJOR shortcut and used refrigerated biscuit dough for the buns and worked perfectly. I also used premade BBQ pulled pork. These came together in a snap!
To make the buns, separate the refrigerated biscuits. Roll each biscuit into a 4.5-inch circle. Place some pulled pork in the center of the biscuit and bring the edges to the center. Pinch the center to seal the biscuit together and place it on parchment paper in the steamer.
Bring water to a boil in a skillet or pot. Add the steamer on top of the skillet or pot and steam the buns. Remove the steamer from the skillet and open the lid.
Tips and Frequently Asked Questions
- It is important to use a can of 7.5-oz refrigerated biscuits. They come with 4 in a pack. There will be 10 biscuits in each can. You can find them at Walmart.
- I tried this recipe with larger biscuits and they were just way too big and had too much dough.
- For the bbq pulled pork, I used a package of premade bbq pork from the grocery store. You can also use pulled pork from your favorite restaurant or make your own.
- Here is our recipe for Instant Pot Pulled Pork: https://www.plainchicken.com/instant-pot-pulled-pork/
- Feel free to add some hoisin sauce or Sriracha to the pork.
- Be careful not to overfill and crowd the steamer basket. The biscuits need space to expand as they cook.
- I purchased bamboo steamer liners to use in this recipe. If you don’t want to buy the liners, you can cut out small squares of parchment paper for each bun, or cut a round circle that fits in the steamer. My liners had small holes in them to allow the steam to get through. You can see them in the photo above.

BBQ Pork Steam Buns
Equipment:
Ingredients:
- 2 (7.5-oz) cans refrigerated biscuits
- 1 lb bbq pulled pork
Instructions:
- Fill a wide, deep skillet or Dutch Oven with 1-inch of water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Meanwhile, gently roll out the biscuits into 4.5-inch rounds. For each bun, spoon about 1 tablespoon of pulled pork onto the center of each dough round. Bring the edges of the biscuit together to the center. Pinch tops of the buns together to seal.
- Spray the bamboo steamer with cooking spray and line with parchment paper. (Cut slits in parchment paper to allow steam to escape if you don't have the precut liners.)
- Set the steamer basket over the boiling water. Add the biscuits to the basket, spacing evenly. Cover and steam for 15 minutes, until cooked through and puffed.
- Gently transfer the buns to a wire rack to cool slightly.
