Pin This RecipeStop what you are doing and add this French Onion Chicken and Rice Bake to your menu tonight! I am totally obsessed with this casserole! It is super simple to make; especially if you use rotisserie chicken. It took 5 minutes to whip together and it was on the table in about 20 minutes!
As I’ve said before, I love Kraft French Onion dip. Make sure to use your favorite brand of refrigerated French Onion dip in this recipe since that gives the dish a lot of flavors. We absolutely LOVED this casserole. I ate way too much of this! We ate the leftovers for lunch the next day and it was equally delicious.
French Onion Chicken and Rice Bake
Ingredients:
- 2 cups instant white rice
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups cooked chopped chicken, about half of a rotisserie chicken
- 1 cup refrigerated sour cream French onion dip
- 1 (10.5-oz) can Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup French Fried Onions
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350ºF. Spray a 9×13-inch pan with cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add instant rice, cover and turn off heat. Allow to stand for 5 minutes, until all water is absorbed.
- In a large bowl, combine chicken, chicken soup, French onion dip, cheddar cheese, chicken broth and cooked rice. Spread into prepared pan. Top with French Fried Onions.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly.
Notes:
- Can substitute 4 cups of any cooked rice for the minute rice and water.
- Can make in advance and refrigerate or freeze for later.
- To bake after freezing, thaw completely and bake as directed above.
- This recipe uses refrigerated sour cream French onion dip such as Helluva Good Dip, Dean’s Dip, Kraft Dip, or Barber’s Dip. Walmart also sells a Great Value refrigerated French Onion Dip.
- If you can’t find the dip, substitute sour cream and a tablespoon of onion soup mix.
- I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup in this dish to control the sodium.

Thank you so much for this easy and delicious recipe! I have made it several times now and it is always hit with my family. It is definately a keeper!
I can't seem to find the sour cream French onion dip, so do you think just plain French onion dip would work?
I suggest using plain sour cream and add a tablespoon or two of onion soup mix
Delicious!. I added more french onion dip and cheese. ❤️
I made with the plain French onion dip it also was good.
I just made this for the first time last night and I absolutely love it. My boyfriend wants me to add more chicken to it but that's about it! I read in the comments that making the rice with chicken broth instead of water adds more taste. I'll definitely have to try that next time!
We have made this several times and really like it. Great comfort food! I love that it’s a quick and easy assemble. Admittedly, I’m more generous with the fried onions as well…..
Thank you for the great recipe. I've used it several times over the last year, and it is a winner every time!
This is awesome stuff! I usually make it with noodles instead of rice! So simple!
Tried this and it was okay. Definitely requires more than 1 cup of french onion dip in my opinion. Once I added more to the finished product, my family gobbled it up!
Absolutely awesome! Kids ate the whole pan and requested it again this week. Definitely a favorite now!
How about using quinoa instead of rice? Healthier option.
Could I use hash browns instead of rice??
I’m sure you could.
My whole family enjoyed this. It’s good comfort food and easy to make.
What about regular rice…don't care for the texture of instant.
I don't care for instant rice…how about regular rice?
i don't use instant rice – i made up 3 cups of regular basmati rice. I also cooked it in chicken broth instead of water to enhance the flavor. the casserole was awesome.
I make the rice in my instant pot with chicken broth or veggie broth instead of water. Delicious!
This is wonderful! I used more of the french fried onion rings though. Can never have too much. This is a keeper.
Looks delish! I'm in South Africa and we don't have French Onion dip – is it a cream cheese based dip?
We have a mean Brown Onion soup powder…just wondering how to use it instead of the Kraft dip – any advice?
K xx
You should be able to use the soup powder and sour cream. The French Onion Dip is a sour cream based dip that's used as a dip for vegetables or
potato chips.
I used the envelope of onion soup mix with sour cream then measured out 1 cup of that for the casserole – worked great.
Hmm I wonder if this would be good with green beans in it too.
I think it would be! I made it tonight and added corn to it. So good!
Could this be assembled the night before and then baked the next day?
I think that would be fine.
i made mine a couple days ahead and stored in the fridge. I did not sprinkle the fried onions on top until i was ready to bake it. We enjoyed it all week. when using the leftovers i just heated in the microwave, then under the broiler for a few minutes to crisp up the onions on top.
I just tried to post but it dodnt work…Let me try again….do you think if I put this in slow cooker and added uncooked rice 30 minutes before the end, it would work? Maybe 6 hours on low?
I haven't tried this in the slow cooker. If you try it, let us know how it turns out! 🙂
