Pin This RecipeOne of our new favorites is the French Onion Potato Casserole I made a few months ago. It is SO delicious. I make it all the time. I started thinking about what else I could use french onion dip in and thought about this chicken noodle casserole. I have a “Cracked Out” version that is crazy good, so I substituted the crack flavors for the french onion dip. To up the onion flavor, I topped the casserole with a can of fried onions. This was SO good. We ate this for dinner and leftover for lunch a few days. This would also be a good freezer meal. Just mix up the casserole and pop in the freezer until you are ready to serve it. Let the casserole thaw in the fridge all day. If it is still frozen when you are ready to bake, add about 15 minutes to the baking time.

Notes:
- This recipe uses a container of refrigerated sour cream based French onion dip, such as Dean’s, Great Value, Barbers, Heluva Good Dip, or Kraft.
- I suggest using Unsalted Cream of Chicken Soup in this dish to control the sodium.

Could you prepare this ahead of time and freeze before baking?
In the description before the recipe itself it says you can freeze.
My first comment on PC.. this turned out surprisingly good!! Only a couple minor changes based on our preferences.. I used a tighter noodle, rotini.. and Cream of Celery so the flavor wasn't so strong.. heading into the baking step, I really thought this was going to be really salty.. after baking, it was perfect (for our family's taste buds).. thanks for another great recipe. 🙂
so glad you enjoyed it!
This is our favorite go to casserole ! You know it’s been a rough day when I fix this, because it’s pure comfort food to make everyone feel better ! Never any leftover.
this was delicious, thanks so much! served w a side of peas.
This turned out great! So much flavor! My husband kept commenting on how delicious it tasted. Thank you for posting this recipe! I ran across this on pinterest. I used Colby and Monterery Jack cheese as I cannot have Cheddar cheese and used 2 cups french fried onion vs. the 1 cup. I will be adding this to my menu planner. 🙂
Oh thank you for this recipe. I have been wondering what was for supper tonight. This is it! Sounds so yummy!
I ran across this on Pinterest, and you made me stop in my tracks and lick my lips. Then I almost licked the screen. Just kidding (kind of).
This is on the menu plan for this week. I have the French Onion Dip with Bacon on hand, and no cheddar cheese so planning on Monteray Jack instead. Can't wait till Thursday to make it 🙂 And I use canned chicken all the time but live in an area where the Grabill County Meats are readily available so use that brand.
I wonder if you can use other kind of cheese.
Yum mine is in the oven right now. 🙂 I used canned chicken for mine. 🙂 it is going to be amazing. I tasted it. Efore it went into the oven :p
How was it with the canned chicken? i am making this tonight and i opted to use the canned chicken to save some time and money
Love this recipe. I make it without the chicken though. I added more French onions. Kids love it
My mom made this a few nights ago. Very delish.
I make this all the time for dinner during the winter. It’s my go-to. I didn’t read the Ingredients list thoroughly so I needed up buying Lays French onion dip in the glass jar, and left everything else the same. I also use a ready to go rotisserie chicken from my grocery store. But the jar, – It’s honestly better that way. I tried the sour cream based and was NOT a fan. The jar works just as well. Amazing recipe.
Just wanted you to know, I made this last night and it was sooo good!! Thanks for the recipe, everyone loved it and it's dinner again tonight!
For the french onion dip, is it just the dip mix? or do I get it in the cold section. Actually I just bought the dip mix and then bought sour cream in case it was dip and not just the mix. So I guess my question is, should I mix the dip mix with the sour cream or just use the seasoning from the mix? 🙂
This recipe uses the French onion dip – so use the sour cream and the mix. I use Kraft french onion dip.
Can I use the greek yogurt french onion dip?
I used the container version–already a dip.
Absolutely loved it! Next round I’m going to add some green beans. But this was amazing! Great casserole on a long cold weekend! I get sick of doing chili so this is a great breakaway on a cold Wisconsin frozen weekend! I will definitely be keeping this in my rotation!! Added crescent rolls, what a great dinner! Looking forward to leftovers for lunch! 😋
This has become a staple in our home. My husband, who gates onions btw, LOVES this recipe. Everytime I ask what to make he suggests this. I would say I cook this probably 2x monthly all year long. It keeps as great left overs too! I have also made it in advance and frozen it, without the onion topping and it’s great!
Stephanie@Plain Chicken,
The recipe does not state what size of cream of chicken soup to use! Two cans of what size???
It lists 2 ( 10.75 oz cans) cream chicken soup
10 1/2 ounce size. Unless a recipe specifically says a size, I always go with the regular can size.
It came out really well. The french fried onions on top gave a nice flavor. I think I will add a can of mushrooms next time.
Two cans of Cream of Chicken? What size cans?
I am glad to see others use french onion dip in casseroles…going to have to start using the french onion fries on top…yum!
Wonderful comfort meal. This meal is perfect for fall. Catherine xo
