Outback Steakhouse Copycat Recipe

Outback Steakhouse’s Alice Springs Chicken is hands-down my favorite thing on the menu! I know Outback has great steaks, but this chicken is my go-to. Grilled chicken topped with honey mustard, mushrooms, bacon, and melted cheese. So much flavor in one bite!

This copycat recipe tastes just like the restaurant. The secret is seasoning the chicken with our Outback Steak Seasoning before grilling. The seasoning is spot on and really makes the dish! You must make this easy chicken recipe ASAP! You won’t be disappointed!

How to Make Alice Springs Chicken

This chicken is super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. Season boneless skinless chicken breasts with Outback Steak Seasoning on both sides. Cook the chicken on the grill or in a large skillet on the stovetop until it reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF.

While the chicken is cooking, cook bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Remove the bacon from the skillet and reserve two tablespoons of bacon greast. Add sliced mushrooms to the skillet and sauté in bacon grease or butter until softened.

Place cooked chicken on a baking sheet. Top each chicken breast with a few tablespoons of honey mustard dressing, cooked mushroom slices, and two slices bacon. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the chicken pieces. Place the chicken under the oven broiler and cook until the cheese has melted. Garnish the chicken with parsley.

Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

  • Here is our recipe for Homemade Outback Steak Seasoning made with kosher salt, paprika, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, coriander, and turmeric: https://www.plainchicken.com/outback-steak-seasoning/
    • Can substitute your favorite steak seasoning or seasoning salt.
  • You can make this recipe with any cut of chicken. Chicken breasts, chicken thighs, or chicken tenderloins all work great.
  • I suggest pounding the chicken breast to an even thickness. We put the chicken in a ziplock bag and use a flat meat mallet to carefully pound out the hump. This ensures that the chicken cooks evenly and you don’t have juicy chicken and half-dry chicken.
  • I don’t have a grill. Can I cook the chicken in the oven or skillet? Yes! To cook the chicken breasts inside, pan-sear it for 3 to 4 minutes per side on medium heat. Place on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake at 400ºF for 10 minutes.
  • You can use fresh mushrooms or a jar of sliced mushrooms.
  • You can use any cheese that you enjoy. Outback Steakhouse uses melted Monterey Jack cheese and Cheddar Cheese. Colby Jack cheese is always good.
  • For a low-carb/keto-friendly dish, use a sugar-free Honey Mustard dressing. Sweet Baby Ray’s and G. Hughes make great sugar-free honey mustard sauce.
  • Can Alice Springs Chicken be made in advance? Yes! You can cook the chicken ahead of time and reheat it and add the toppings when you are ready to serve.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.
