This Awesome Sauce Chicken is crazy good! We ate this for lunch and dinner on the same day! YUM! It is super easy to make and tastes AWESOME!????
The inspiration for this marinade came from one of our favorite sports bars. They had a sandwich on the menu that came with this sauce. I absolutely loved the sauce. I had to know what it was made of. The waitress asked the cook and he said honey mustard, hot sauce, and teriyaki sauce. Easy enough! I whipped up the sauce at home and it was perfect. I thought the flavors would work well on chicken, so I decided to test it out. Guess what? It worked! A little sweet from the teriyaki and honey mustard and a little spicy from the hot sauce. We absolutely loved this chicken!!
How to Make Grilled Awesome Sauce Chicken
As I mentioned, the chicken is marinated in a combination of honey mustard, teriyaki sauce, and hot sauce. I used Sweet Baby Ray’s teriyaki sauce and Frank’s Hot Sauce. I let the chicken hang out overnight in the marinade before grilling. If you don’t have overnight, just let the chicken marinate as long as possible before cooking on the grill.
My number one tip for grilling chicken breasts is to pound the chicken to an even thickness. Pounding the chicken breasts allows the chicken to cook evenly. This will prevent you from having half-dry chicken and half-juicy chicken. Just place the chicken breasts in a gallon ziplock bag and use a flat meat mallet to pound out the thick end of the chicken. You can use the same bag to marinate the chicken.
How to Grill Chicken Without a Grill
If you don’t have a grill, you can still make this yummy chicken! My preferred indoor cooking method is a combination of pan searing and finishing off in the oven. Cook the chicken in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 3 or 4 minutes per side. Place the chicken on a baking sheet and bake at 400ºF for an additional 10 minutes. Check the chicken to make sure it has an internal temperature of 165ºF. You DO NOT want pink chicken!
What to Serve with Grilled Awesome Sauce Chicken
We LOVED this Awesome Sauce Chicken. It is packed FULL of amazing flavor. The chicken is great with potatoes, rice, asparagus, green beans, corn. Leftovers are great chopped up on top of a salad or in a wrap. I usually double the recipe so we can eat leftovers during the week. I love having yummy chicken ready to eat in the fridge!

Could I use regular barbecue sauce instead of the teriyaki sauce?
You can make this however you would like.
Add mexican street corn to the what to serve with it. We loved the flavor combo.
It was awesome! Used bone in, skin on chicken thighs in air fryer. Thought I remembered ingredients but didn’t..I marinated in mixture of sweet baby Ray bbq sauce, honey mustard & teriyaki sauce..then looked it up. Made more with the 3 correct ingredients plus the BBQ sauce. Glazed tops of chicken last few minutes. Wow! Awesome! Can’t wait for better weather to try on the grill. Thanks!
OMG! This sauce is so good! This sauce was amazing on chicken sandwiches. I am going to try it on beef and pork next. Yum!!!!!
I made this chicken the other night. It was a huge hit.
I made my own teriyaki sauce. It is a keeper !
SO glad you enjoyed it, Morrisa!
Hello,
If you do not have Teriyaki sauce, can you use another sauce instead?
Thank you,
I don’t want to buy teriyaki sauce because we usually don’t like it store bought… I’m wondering if I could sub the sauce from your (Plain Chicken) Teriyaki Chicken recipe? (That sauce is so good!) Hmm…
Sure! I’m sure it would work fine
Loved it! I will say I did not expect to like this as I do not like anything hot and I don’t like mustard but I have to say this was a great dip for chicken. Not overly hot and the taste of mustard is overrode by the other ingredients and was very tasty. I did not note any benefit to marinating the chicken in the sauce as I did not note the flavor in the chicken but it was a great dip for the grilled chicken.
Can you do on a blackstone
I don’t see why not
So good and I cooked it on the stove and in the oven like you recommended. Turned out moist and delicious!
Can you freeze the chicken in marinate?
Sure!
Will it be ok to pre make these by freezing the chicken and marinate in a bag? Then when it defrosts it marinates.
That will be just fine.
How long in the crockpot ? Want to try it 5 HR/6hr
4 or 5 hours on LOW?
If I don’t have honey mustard would Dijon mustard work.
Sure. It will change the flavor of the dish, but if you like dijon it should be fine.
One of the best grilling chicken recipes I’ve tasted. So versatile. We do it by itself with sides or on a salad. It grills so perfectly I’d be reluctant to do it in the oven or crock pot and get the same result.
Can you do this in the instant pot? And then maybe sear it a bit after it cooks?
Thanks for such great recipes!!
I added orange juice concentrate, and lime juice And a bit of soy sauce because my teriyaki sauce was really thick. Made my own honey mustard because I didn’t have bottled sauce.
Chicken was juicy and delicious! Great grilled! Excellent alternative to the usual marinades.
Thanks for sharing!
Can this be made with shrimp or tofu?
How do I convert this for an air fryer?
In the text of the article, it’s suggested cooking in the oven @425* after searing but in the recipe portion, it says oven temp is 400*. Which is correct?
It should be 400ºF. I corrected it.
This was a huge hit last night in our house. The littles liked it which was a huge plus. We will be making it again for sure.
I think would be so good shredded and as taco filling. Any suggestions on a topping? Some kind of slaw maybe?
If making this in the crock pot, would it fall apart? Marinating now, but the hubby is super funny about grilling, he won’t let me touch it when he’s home! LOL
And by the way I ALWAYS love your recipes! I’m so excited for this one!
It might fall apart. You can cook it for 3 hours and check to see if it is done. Carefully lift it out of the crockpot and it won’t fall apart.
Has anyone made this is a crockpot? How long did you cook it if so?
4 to 6 hours
4-6 hours on high or low for crock pot?
Can I cook this in the instant pot?
I’m sure you can.
Roughly how big were your breasts and what grill temp did you use and for how long? Please and thank you.
I think I’m going to make this in the crockpot and shred it for sandwiches, wraps, salads. Do I need to reduce the mix of the sauces?
I would keep the sauce the same.
I cannot wait to use this to toss my chicken wings in as well for game day parties
YUM!
Is there a way to cook the marinade after I cook the chicken so I can still use it as a sauce?
I usually just make extra sauce to use after it is cooked. You can try bringing the sauce to a boil and cooking it. I’m not sure if it would cook down too much or not.
Your recipe calls for 4-6 boneless chicken breasts, how many pounds would you say since there are so many variations in the size of chicken breasts?
Ask butcher in your supermarket.
Your recipe calls for Hot Sauce, but the photo is showing buffalo wing sauce? Which one is it????
Either is fine!!!!! They are basically the same.
Do you salt and pepper the chicken before grilling?
no – I just marinated it in the marinade. You can add salt and pepper if you wish.
I wouldn’t put any extra salt…usually Teriyaki is loaded with salt.
I have regular teriyaki sauce, will that do? Or does it need to be a thicker sauce like the sweet baby rays? Is the baby rays a bbq sauce that is flavored teriyaki?
Regular teriyaki sauce will be fine.
How spicy does this end up being, on a scale of 1 to picky 8 year old??
My best guess is 1.5 to 2? It isn’t really spicy because the chicken is just marinated in the sauce and not basted in it. I’ve had tons of people say their picky kids LOVE it. They have been as young as 2 and 4 years old. I think you should be safe.
What was on the sandwich that this was served with? Was it a chicken sandwich?
Roast Beef if I remember correctly.
Wow i cant wait to cook this on my own, thank you for sharing this delicious chicken in sauce.
Where do you find Sweet Baby Ray's Teriyaki sauce?
Walmart, Target, Publix – just about at every grocery store. It will be with all of the other Sweet Baby Ray’s products.
This sauce is also great on grilled Pork chops!! It is also a great dipping sauce!! I found all of the ingredients at Wal-Mart.
Could this be used on pork chops or a pork butt roast? What do you think?
I think it would be delicious!
How about using bone in chicken thighs and would the cooking time change.
Any cut of chicken will work fine. Chicken on the bone takes longer to cook. Check for an internal 165 degrees when cooking.
If using bone in chicken breast do you remove the skin before marinating and grilled?
That is completely up to you.
Has anyone tried recipe using bone in chicken breast and which do you prefer hot sauce or wing sauce please. Thank you!!
You can use this on any cut of chicken. You will just need to adjust the cooking time accordingly. Make sure the internal temperature is 165ºF.
I used Frank's Hot Sauce and Frank's Wing Sauce.
Do you make extra sauce for dipping the chicken in once it's cooked, or do you eat it just as is without any dipping sauce?
We ate it as it, but it would be great with extra sauce.
I have a question! Would this also work with shredded rotisserie chicken – if it summers in the sauce awhile like a pulled chicken sandwich filling? Or is it more flavorful grilled?
Absolutely! That sounds delicious. I'm going to try it this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration!
In the picture it shows Frank's Buffalo Wings Sauce, but in the recipe it says Frank's Red Hot Sauce. Did you use the original hot sauce or the buffalo wing sauce? Thanks! This looks amazing and cannot wait to try it!
Either is fine. I’ve used both
Do you recommend cooking the chicken in the air fryer?
