Ranch dressing mix is a pantry staple at our house. We use it in a TON of recipes; especially all of our Cracked Out Recipes on the blog. I usually buy dry ranch seasoning packets at the grocery store, but I decided it was finally time to make my own homemade ranch seasoning. By making a homemade version of the seasoning packets, I can control the sodium content and omit the MSG that is in all the store-bought packets of ranch dressing mix. YAY!
How to Make Homemade Ranch Seasoning Mix
This dry ranch mix is super easy to make at home. You only need a few simple ingredients, a bowl, and a whisk. In a large bowl, combine powdered buttermilk, dried parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, freeze-dried chives, dried dill weed, salt, and black pepper. Transfer the seasoning to an airtight container and refrigerate until ready to use.
Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions
- The main ingredient in the mix is dry buttermilk powder. I used Saco buttermilk powder. It should be in the baking aisle near the powdered milk at the grocery store.
- This recipe is the equivalent of about 4 packets of dressing packets. Store the dressing mix in the refrigerator. It will keep for about 2 months in an airtight container. I use a mason jar to store the dry mix.
- For a finer seasoning mix, place all of the ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth.
- Can substitute fresh spices for the dried herbs in the mix. You must triple the amount of dried herbs if using fresh herbs.
- To make ranch salad dressing, whisk together 3 tablespoons of the dry seasoning with 1 cup of mayo, ½ cup sour cream (or plain Greek yogurt), and ½ cup buttermilk.
- Yes, I use buttermilk powder AND real buttermilk in the dressing. It makes the dressing taste amazing. Trust me!
- The prepared dressing will keep for about 5 days in the refrigerator in a sealed jar.

I make this recipe using whole milk instead of fresh buttermilk and tastes great. You could also make buttermilk substitute using milk and a small amount of vinegar.
My store is completely out of buttermilk powder would instant nonfat dry milk powder work? Especially if I’m using this for the cracked potato recipe
You could definitely try it. It just won’t have the exact same flavor, but I think it would be ok.
I love making my own dressings and this is a winner! Took me forever to get the dry buttermilk mix…finally ordered it thru Walmart and had it delivered. I tasted it when first mixed and it was okay, but after it sat for a few hours in the fridge it was really good!! You can make as little or as much as you want! Love it ❤️
Great recipe, Am I having issues under standing all these questions, have people really have no idea of what they are doing, Make the mix, and when they need dressing, mix with the butter milk and other ingredients, Come one people, Now that I got that off my chest the chicken chili was awesome 👍
With all dry ingredients why does it need to be refrigerated? Just curious.
The dry buttermilk needs to be refrigerated
Hi all – the powdered buttermilk has to be refrigerated after opening according to the packaging label. To comply, please refrigerate the mix per the instructions on the label for safety. Hope this helps.
Thank you for this! I am going to make it as part of a Christmas gift for Christmas.
I have a question. Do you get the glass airtight container from HL, WM, or another big box? I love your presentation!
Stephanie…..To make your ranch dressing mix you use Powdered Buttermilk, and to use the mix to make ranch dressing, you use a 1/2 cup of Buttermilk? Am I understanding this right?
That is how I usually make it.
Have you tried looking on Amazon?
Where do you find buttermilk powder? I have never seen it before.
Thanks
I buy it at the grocery store, Walmart & Target.
Have you tested this mix in Mississippi Pot Roast?
Sounds great! Can’t wait to try them!
How long does the dry powder mix keep? Does it have to be refrigerated if left dry?
