I whipped up this Homemade BBQ sauce last weekend. Chicken Legs brought the meat inside and said “This smells like Rendezvous“. It did, but it tasted even better! OMG! It is the best BBQ sauce I’ve ever had! It was so quick and easy, and it tastes amazing. Just a touch of sweetness and loaded with tons of great flavor. Give this sauce a try the next time you fire up the grill. You won’t be disappointed!
How to Make Homemade BBQ Sauce from Scratch
This sauce is super easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. In a medium saucepan, stir together ketchup, water, apple cider vinegar, white vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, Kosher salt, black pepper, and cumin. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and simmer on medium-low heat for 20 minutes, until the sauce starts to thicken.
- I use Heinz ketchup.
- Can substitute honey or molasses for brown sugar.
- Try adding other spices like smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, dry mustard or cayenne pepper for a little kick.
- The sauce will keep for several months in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Is Homemade BBQ Sauce gluten-free? Yes! All of the ingredients in the sauce are gluten-free.
What to Serve with BBQ Sauce
This sauce is great for ribs, grilled chicken, pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, chicken wings, and pork chops. It also makes a great dipping sauce for chicken tenders. I actually love to use this in place of pizza sauce for a BBQ chicken pizza! YUM!
I always have a jar of this sauce in the fridge. It is SO much better than any store-bought sauce. This recipe also makes a great homemade hostess gift. Pour the sauce into a mason jar and tie a ribbon around it. I love to bring a jar to summer cookouts.

I made this sauce today and it is fabulous! I can't wait to try it again tomorrow after it has been in the fridge. Thank you for sharing your recipe!
for some reason all the recipes that I have placed in my recipe box which is controlled by zip list have all disappeared! any explanation from them? I have tried to enter the perfect BBQ sauce, it notes that it has been added but when I check on the filters it shows 0 for Plain Chicken amonsgt others.
This sounds like the perfect bbq sauce. Can't wait to try it! Pinning now 🙂
Sounds fabulous to me!
Yum!
The plate looks delicious and the sauce sounds like a winner. I've tried making my own a few times and am always disappointed with the results so next time I'll try yours.
We will be hosting on the Fourth. I'm thinking of making these as take-home gifts for our guests (plus a few jars for myself). I'm glad to see this recipe because most involve starting with chunks of onion and waiting for that to simmer down before pureeing.
