This Sloppy Joe Bubble Up Casserole is a family favorite! Sloppy joes tossed with biscuits and topped with cheese. Comfort in a pan! Ground beef, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, biscuits, and cheese. All the flavors of sloppy joes and they aren’t actually messy! Maybe I should call this Unsloppy Joe Bubble Up! LOL! No matter what you call this, you need to make this ASAP!
How to Make Sloppy Joe Bubble Up
This casserole is easy to make with only a few simple ingredients. In a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium-high heat until no longer pink. Drain excess grease. Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
Cut canned biscuits into quarters and place in a large bowl. Add beef mixture to the bowl and toss to coat. Transfer mixture to a 9×13-inch baking dish that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Bake in a preheated oven until the biscuits are cooked through and golden brown. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole and make an additional 5 minutes, until the cheese has melted.
Helpful Tips & Frequently Asked Questions
- I make the sloppy joe sauce, but you could use a couple of cans of Manwich sauce or two packets of sloppy joe mix if you don’t want to make your own.
- I use the smaller canned biscuits as opposed to the larger Grands! Biscuits. I find that they cook better in these bubble up casseroles.
- If you use the larger 16.3-ounce can of Grands! biscuits, I suggest only using 6 biscuits from the can and cutting each biscuit into 6-8 pieces so they cook through.
- Make sure to spread the biscuits into one single layer in the baking dish. This will ensure they cook evenly and you don’t have clumps of uncooked biscuit dough.
- Can substitute ground turkey for lower calories.
- You can use any cheese that you prefer in this dish. Colby-Jack cheese or cheddar cheese are our favorites.
- What can I add to the casserole?
- diced onion
- mushrooms
- Green bell peppers
- diced tomatoes
- Can Sloppy Joe Bubble be made in advance? Yes. The sloppy joe mixture can be made ahead of time and tossed with the biscuits when you are ready to bake.
- You can also assemble the whole casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it until you are ready to bake.
- I find that the biscuits cook better and fluffier if they are baked immediately.
- Can I freeze Sloppy Joe Bubble Up? Yes. Bake the casserole and cool completely. Cover the casserole dish with plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- When ready to serve, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the microwave or covered in the oven.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.

Had for lunch today..Son bought the jumbo biscuits so cut into 6ths.. my baking dish is a bit larger than 9×143, but that allowed the biscuits to get done… Can’t wait to try the other Bubble Up recipes.

SO glad you enjoyed it!
Another fabulous recipe 😋. I’m finding that most of the recipes I use are yours!
Made my first bubble up tonight. This was pretty good. I added a little chopped up onion and red and green peppers and used garlic other than garlic salt. Will be trying one of the chicken ones next. Thanks for a great idea.
Made this last night. Delish! Thanks for yet another winner!
You heifer! I thought I'd thought up something no one else had! Blast it! It's like we live in the same head. Or stomach. Oh well! I'm making something very similar over the weekend!
LOL! I do the same thing! Enjoy your version!!
Just made this and it is delish!! However will have to add more meat next timen , it was more biscuit than meat.
This sounds so good! =)
Happy Thanksgiving!
I have not been feeling well for the past few weeks so I had to have something easy to make and that I could eat for a few days if I am not able to get out of bed. It smells yummy yum, and I can’t wait to dig in.
I also made a half batch of the French onion bubble up to put in the fridge so I basically have enough to eat for several days when getting out of bed feels next to impossible. I am always looking for a very good but easy to make dinner.
Much less sloppy indeed! I'm going to remember this one for a comforting meal on a snowy day.
